I want to highlight something you said, OP: "should be getting paid".

Tons of fanfic writers DO publish original fiction and oh my god, if it only it were that easy to reach an audience who wants to give you money for your story. You put in so much work, not just in writing but in editing, editing some more, formatting, designing a cover, uploading it to Amazon or other sites, trying to interest readers in your work, watching shitty books bring in more money than yours and...

... and then you remember why writing fanfiction is so much easier and more appealing, even if it doesn't earn you any money.
