I'm always wildly amused by the innocent assumption that "getting published and making money" is as easy as finishing the draft of that original novel. Um, yeah, the world is TOTALLY not filled with frustrated would-be writers trying to get someone, anyone to notice their manuscript. It's PERFECTLY EASY to get an agent, and a publishing deal, and to sell enough books to make a living at!

I also like the assumption that anyone who can write pretty well should want that to be their career. Because naturally, nobody could possibly have a completely unrelated career they like, and nobody could possibly consider writing and sharing stories a fun hobby they have no desire to try to make a living at.
