Yep, ACD!Holmes isn't half a bad guy. That's why I usually view adaptations as just being separate series or simply adapting the style and spirit of the stories rather than adapting the actual stories themselves. I've heard Elementary!Holmes is closer to ACD!Holmes but I haven't watched it yet myself.

I agree. In fact, Holmes and Watson, by the standards of the day, have some rather enlightened viewpoints, going so far as to refuse to condemn women who rail against the divorce laws in the UK.

ACD's distaste of British marital law comes up more than once in the books, sometimes thinly-veiled, sometimes not veiled at all. IIRC, there was also The Devil's Foot, The Boscombe Valley Mystery, and The Illustrious Client.

He was a strong campaigner for divorce law reform IRL.

Elementary!Holmes is a decent person at heart who's gone through a fair amount of fucked-up stuff and doesn't quite have filters anymore. He's arrogant about his intellect, sure, but there are plenty of moments where he shows gentleness and kindness.
