I guess it's that people who find those details to be a turn-on wouldn't actually be put off of a fic if those details don't turn up. Whereas on the flip side, people who find those details to be off-putting would be put off a fic if those details do turn up.

So it's less "nooo don't ever put details that might be off-putting to people into any porn fic evaaaaa", more "don't unexpectedly drop those details unannounced into otherwise very smutty porn if it doesn't relate to the scenario, because if it doesn't relate to the scenario, most of your readership is not going to be people looking for those kinds of details, and so it might kill your readership's buzz."

(Which is just a recommendation for not putting off readers, of course, not a recommendation for how you're ~supposed~ to write fanfic. Fanfic is one of those awesome things where you don't have to give a shit about readers if you don't want to -- you can pretty much chuck your own personal fantasies onto your journal and just see if anyone else likes it without worrying that you'll be embarrassed or waste money if no one else likes it.)
