Cyberpunk is frequently about the commodification of humanity, and the influence of business upon the personal. It's like the one genre where fanservice actually works as effective commentary on the core themes.

Even setting aside the interesting arguments about the Major actually being born male and not trans which entirely changes the dynamic.
