Mostly they're all variations on a theme, such as: Character A was kidnapped but nobody really noticed because he's not around or involved much or likes to go off on his own now and then. He's missing for months or years. They only stumble upon him later in some big bad's lair or whatever and he is nearly unrecognizable. Weightloss, curling in on himself, etc etc. They rescue him and bring him home but now there's a long road to recovery. Sometimes this includes memory loss for the tortured character, sometimes not. Often there's a theme of the tortured person having been 'trained' and having to deprogram them. Having to teach them it's okay to ask for things, okay to want things, etc. It's all full of cliches and woobie classics, though I do try and keep things in character within my own imagination.
