I don't know much about the underarm bacterial colonies. There's this great new invention, it's called "soap". It's done wonders for me. Try it!

I have. It's pretty great. However, it doesn't stop the association from happening. For example, it can work kind of like this:

Long underarm hair is associated with men -> men tend to have more testosterone -> testosterone causes men to smell and sweat more (in general) -> long underarm hair is smelly and sweaty.

Same goes for associating long underarm hair with people who don't tend to other socially prescriptive personal hygiene regimens, some of which are useful, some of which are just there to encourage you to buy more beauty products. People don't think about the usefulness, they just think about the fact that people who don't groom tend to smell, and thus another association is born.

Your basic assumption is faulty. It really depends on what country you're in/from and even, sometimes, what part of what country.

All you can really say is that you or possibly your region/country make those associations.
