Canon purist ahoy. In every fandom. I just... the reason I participate in fandoms is because I like the canon and want there to be more of it, not because I want to change it.

I don't think many people want to "change it." People usually play around and change things from canon in order to see canon more clearly -- throw it into sharper relief by altering some variables to observe others. Rather like changing the way a contraption fits together to better understand the function of the individual components.

So like, change a plot point to see how the canon character would have reacted to a different state of affairs and trace their actions' motivations and consequences to their sources and ends, and therefore, better understand the reasons why the characters reacted to the canon state of affairs the way they did. Change a relationship from platonic to romantic to see what the core values of a relationship are. Make an adaptation with a slightly different interpretation of some canon elements in order to see if they can isolate the spirit of the work from the nitty-gritty details, because changing the nitty-gritty details and keeping the spirit the same makes the spirit that much easier to define and put into words and understand.

Sure, fix-fic exists, but usually, changing things from canon are a method of exploring canon, not denying it. It's not something you personally need to be a fan of at all, but please don't misunderstand other people's motivations behind it.

Oh, I do. I don't begrudge them that. I just don't tend to play that way. =)
