it's certainly very useful against burglary and home invasion where people are looking for easy targets such as homes with unlocked front doors.

Unlocked front doors - AND NOBODY AWAKE INSIDE. The minute there is somebody who can defend the property inside, it stops being an easy target. This is why locking your door is a good idea when you're out, or when you're asleep.

And, no, not everybody lives in a low crime area.

But that's not even vaguely relevant to what I'm saying.

Not all crimes are equally likely - crimes committed against occupied houses or the people within, by people not legitimately in the house are vanishingly rare.

By far, the crimes a person is most likely to be a victim of in their own home are domestic abuse, and acquaintance rape - ie, they're going to be victimized by the people they live with, or let in themselves.

Even in high crime areas.

ESPECIALLY in the areas with the highest crime rates in North America, the Canadian territories. Isolated Northern settlements with sky-high alcoholism rates, and resulting high rates of domestic abuse. (Yes, not urban areas. Surprise, surprise.)
