Genre cliches that are trotted out without any attempt to give them a new spin, justify them, or properly deal with the consequences. It's just a sign of utter laziness to add something in just because it's expected rather than have it enrich the narrative.

I can't tell you how many times I got intrigued with an anime concept and then went, "Oh god, here we go with the protagonist oversleeping. Sigh. And here's the childhood sweetheart who is all tsundere towards him and his peers pick on him, but like they'll matter because this peaceful town is probably gonna be destroyed. ... Wait, he has a keepsake from his disappeared father? FOR GOD'S SAKE. And it's obviously a key-like object but this nimrod has never bothered to figure out what it works with. Okay now the town is being destroyed, right on cue. Ooh, sweet giant mecha designs! Wait ... is he ... yep he's just fallen in the cockpit of a mecha and his key is glowing, later, I am fucking done here."

This also extends to character cliches and stereotypes, which is a goddamn epidemic in anime. It's fine if they start off as character types and grow from there, but the majority of the time they don't get a character arc so they stay annoying cliches for the whole series. Either flesh them out, or keep them in the background.

This, oh so fucking much. Anime is just so fucking stagnant these days and yeah, it has always had its cliches and been a bit stagnant but never to this degree. There's still a few gems coming out every season or so though. I just stick to manga and older series.
