The only time this has ever happened to me was when I was talking to my best friend about this one character and saying all these mortifying things about her boobs and rhapsodizing about her personality and saying she was the best character... and yeah, my best friend has the same name and was looking at me like a weirdo. Whoops! I can read fanfic just fine without associations with my friend, but actually talking about my fandom crush to my IRL friend just makes it too weird (especially since, yeah, back in the day I had a crush on my friend, too, before I realized she was tragically hetero).
