I share your shame, OP.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
That you enjoy making these OCs is all that counts, OP. It's not dumb or silly. And I bet your OCs are fun, too.

Hey

It's cool Anon. I put quite a bit of author appeal in my characters lately, and often try to pull off characters that might seem like Mary Sues. They're fun to make and a good challenge to pull them off well.

The protagonist of my latest idea is somewhat wealthy, has an unusual name, and dresses in clothes I wish existed when I was in my tween years, oh and she goes to a school that's like ALMOST my ideal school. But I try to give her her own separate problems and obstacles and that good stuff(like not being that good at magic for a good damn while and having problems fitting in, and standing up to people).

*ahem* anyway, but yeah. There shouldn't be any shame if you're just having fun. I mean maybe it would be problem if you were forcing the characters on people and stuff but you're not. You sound reasonably cool and mature about it.

So don't feel shame for having fun , OP! Writing should be fun after all.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with you for doing what many of us do inside our own heads anyway. I may not enjoy reading other people's Suefics, but that doesn't stop me from dreaming up my own in the privacy of my own skull. Do what makes you happy, and if other people don't like your art, they don't have to look at it.

ngl I think this is weird, but I get the impression most fannish people did this when they were younger... you just have yet to make the transition from silly blatant self-inserts to more sophisticated and sneaky self-inserts.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-28 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I like your thinking.

Nothing silly about making up OC's, it's fun. I imagine there are a fair number of people that do it, even if they don't write or draw them.

Guilty as charged as well... but I'm not ashamed or sorry one single bit, either. It took me a long time to realize that, hey, I'm having fun with this kind of stuff. Sure, it's not really all that original, but it's fun and it makes me happy. (Plus, I have my own non-fandom OCs, so I feel like I can dabble in FCs every now and then)

That said, if that's the kind of stuff that makes you happy, then who cares what other people have to say about it? It's not like it's harming anyone else or their well-being, and tbh if people get so incensed and/or upset over how other people like to express their fannishness -and that includes making fan characters-, then I kinda feel sorry for them. But ymmv and all that, of course.

Just a fly by saying that your OCs are awesome.

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2013-11-28 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Awh, thank you, Anon! <3

(Anonymous) 2013-11-28 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
I agree! Or at least, I feel that it should be that way!

Instead I hide things away more so in fear of Judgey McJudgepants everywhere ._.

I do this too. It's a bit of silly fun. That's allowed. Not everything has to be brilliant, sometimes it can just be something that amuses you. You don't owe anyone any explanations.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-28 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I do that too, sort of. I get super bored when I'm out running, and I sort of absentmindedly think up really OTT Mary Sues to insert into whatever show I fancy at the moment. I don't write fic about them (and I'm not talented enough to draw anything ever), but it gives me something to look forward to when I'm dragging my feet about going running.

Media fandom will probably always have some degree of hate-on for OCs, but for what it's worth I don't think it's as dumb as you think it is.

I think it's cool.

I think this is pretty normal?

The reason people hate Sues is because no one likes to read other people's boring power fantasies. Doesn't mean we don't all have fantasies of our own.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-30 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. I don't think it's bad to make up Sues (and Suefics, art, whatever), I just wish people wouldn't post it in public and clutter up fandom spaces. Seriously, with some of my fandoms, about 80% of what gets posted is Mary Sue stuff...

(Anonymous) 2013-11-28 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
I do the same, except I feel no shame. I have so much fun with my OCs and honestly I've learned a lot of character writing through them. I don't write fic about them because it's just not something I want to put much effort into-- but I'm confident that if I did it'd be pretty good.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-28 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Do not feel ashamed. You are definitely not alone on this.
I pretty much do the same and keep this stuff in my imagination because my fandom doesn't care about OC's, but I think it's normal for people to create OC's or for them to imagine scenarios of themselves in a fictional world.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-28 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Hell, I still write full-length fanfiction for my self-insert. The main difference between adult!me and middle school!me is that I don't post it anymore. It's harmless fun, OP. I don't think there's anything wrong with it.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-28 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, I like Mary Sues. They can serve as wish fulfillment, but somewhere around grade 11 I began to use Mary Sues as imaginary test dummies to act out scenarios etc. I started adding more conflict and realistic challenges for them to face, and then added people I've known or had conflicts with. Not only did I learn how to write interesting plot driven stories, but I feel like my intuition has developed as well.
Everyone should feel free to create a world where there is absolutely no limits unless they set them themselves.

There's nothing wrong with writing self-inserts in a fic as long as you're having fun with it. I do it all the time, because it's a good way to practice and hone your writing skills.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-30 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
There's nothing wrong with this, OP. :)
