Not related to the Sherlock-ness of the secret buttttt...

I found Freddie to be annoying as hell and creepy and I'm so glad she didn't end up with him.

A guy who falls in love with a girl after five minutes because she makes him laugh with her 'adorable' social faux pas? The social faux pas that left her mortified? Never mind that this was the girl he practically shoved into the gutter in the middle of a downpour and didn't pay a lick of attention to earlier in the film. Stick her in a pretty dress and suddenly he's in love? Yea, right. I really doubt it would have lasted. I always felt like Freddy was fascinated with her the way you become fascinated by some weird oddity at a carnival. Or like visiting a new country and becoming obsessed with all the pretty things that you forget about as soon as you go back home.

I liked that Higgins was in love with her but that she wasn't in love with him. She cared about him deeply as a friend and mentor. And honestly? It always made me happy that, in spite of all his schooling and intelligence, she still had the upper hand in the end. He was even more of a wreck without her than she was without him.

Uh dude? That's kind of exactly the point of the character. Silly young love that thinks it's the end-all-be-all of grand eternal love. I haven't seen the movie in years and even I remember that. Didn't you listen to Eliza's song?

Words, words, words
I'm so sick of words
I get words all day through
First from him, now from you
Is that all you blighters can do?

Don't talk of stars, burning above
If you're in love, show me
Tell me no dreams, filled with desire
If you're on fire, show me

...

Here we are together in the middle of the night
Don't talk of spring, just hold me tight
Anyone who's ever been in love'll tell you that
This is no time for a chat

Haven't your arms, hungered for mine?
Please don't "expline", show me, show me
And don't wait until wrinkles and lines
Pop out all over my brow, show me now

What part of my comment makes you think that I missed the point of the character? This was the first musical that I ever watched as a child and remains one of my absolute favorites. I know that it's the point of the character.

But apparently a ton of people up-thread think that Eliza should have absolutely chosen him and would have been happy with him. Which just blows my mind entirely. Eliza was vacation to Freddy. Great because it's new and shiny but you would absolutely get sick of it after a while. I don't see how anyone would want Eliza to commit to that.

You are reading far too much into my comments, at least (can't speak for others). I wasn't saying "OMG true love". I was noting that Jeremy!Freddie was a lot prettier than Harrison!Higgins. That's all. Sometimes we are allowed to be shallow.

If the story demands she marry and the alternative is Higgins, go Freddie. But probably go no-one.

I apologize, but your comment really did seem like you were disagreeing with the author. In any case, you're talking about it as though it's some big insight and unique opinion that people have never thought of before.

Give people some credit - they're allowed to ship things even when they know it wouldn't actually work IRL. There's no harm in it.
