I want to rant about this now instead of waiting 2 weeks for a secret to post.

I hate that SJWs in fandom have turned any female character who's not a badass fighter into something to bitch about. She's smart and she helps a lot in the background but she's not good in a fight so she's not a "strong" female character (because people still take that literally.) She has feelings and sometimes gets caught or hurt. PATRIARCHARCHIAL OPPRESSION.

Despite the fact that in the fandom I am thinking of in particular ALL of the other females are good fighters and some of the males are bad. Males also get caught and hurt. In fact pre-production originally there was just a guy and he was split and made into a male and female character with similar traits.... and he's the fandom baby.

I guess it is true that fandom SJWs are a special level of mysogynists.

Probably Old news, but most of my fandom experience is anywhere but hyper-feminist-land.

You think that is bad? Have you seen what some SJWs think of trans people? Terrible, terrible, TERRIBLE things.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-30 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
IKR?

"I'm a feminist, and trans women aren't real women."

nope, sorry, that's not my feminism, gtfo

i feel you but have you seen what the majority of the (non-SJW) population thinks of trans people? i will take the SJWs over them any day of the damn week, up to and including my birthday

Your birthday comes once a week? You lucky bastard!

(Also, agree.)

I think the difference is, SJWs should fucking know better.

This radfem vs trans* activists internet gang war shit gotta stop.

Yeah...the worst SJWs may be only a few steps up from the cesspit but goddamn every little bit helps.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-30 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I hate that. A "strong" female character doesn't have to be physically strong. The "strength" comes in how she's written.

I find characters that have weaknesses & flaws and well-rounded personalities and hidden depths to be much more interesting than any generic action-movie "badass".

Give me female characters that are morally gray, that have to make difficult decisions, that wrestle with their own demons, that overcome (or maybe succumb). Give me female villains that are genuinely terrifying, and not "vampy seductress" or "creepy ghost girl". Give me female characters that are heroic, and tragic, and INTERESTING.

None of this cardboard crap.

I'm always reminded of this image from the "big three" of manga at the time in such discussions.

(I'm aware Nami has fanservice out the wazoo, but as the image alludes to, you can honestly say the crew would be fucked without her. Take Saukra or Orihime out of the situation and you'd, Oh, I dunno, lose one filler battle/need a new plot device)

It's not just SJWs who do this. It's all kinds of people who think that women have to have one certain kind of strength in order to be a "strong female character" and all others are too weak and "girly".

(Anonymous) 2013-11-30 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
SJWs are the Westboro Baptist Church version of feminists.

I am going to frame this quote and hang it on my wall.

Careful now, WBC will probably sue for defamation. Some things are beneath even them.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-30 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Does SJW even mean anything anymore

(Anonymous) 2013-11-30 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
It means 'someone who criticized a show/character/movie/etc that I like'

(Anonymous) 2013-11-30 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
It means "hipster".

(Anonymous) 2013-11-30 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Really? In my corner I see a lot more frothing over women who ARE badass. (Explanation: they feel that more often than not that is their sole defining trait, thus the character is cheaply written to get Strong Female Character points.)

Not sure if all or even most of the frothing is done by SJWs though, so maybe that's irrelevant to the discussion... ah well. I guess the lesson here is that good characters are hard and some people are going to misinterpret them anyway.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-30 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Not sure why you felt like you couldn't jusr say you're pissed ar Agents of SHIELD reception aince that's clearly what you're talking about.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-30 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Cause it's not Agents of Shield.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-30 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Thinking female characters aren't strong if they can't fight is so ten years ago in my fandoms. Thinking female characters need another strength to fill in for physical strength if they don't have it is the new attitude that needs to go.

Another thing: let some female characters be boring cardboard cutouts as long as there are more who aren't and there are some boring cardboard male characters too. Boring people exist and some are female. It's okay.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-30 01:47 am (UTC)(link)

This is why I just more or less watch my shows and stay the fuck out of fandom these days. SJWs ruin anything and everything they touch.

I do agree, but this rant also makes me think of something that happens a lot with smart, powerful, capable female characters whether they're fighters or not, in which their vulnerability always ends up fetishized in a way I rarely see with male characters. Like, they're treated by other characters and the narrative as if despite whatever independence and competence they have, ultimately, they're still meant to be regarded as something to feel protective towards, rather than someone to be respected - like all their badassery, physical or not, is still just window dressing on the inherently fragile femininity that they can never escape. It really taints attempts to make admirable female characters, for me, and is harder to ignore when they aren't fighters.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-30 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
I assure you this particular piece of media fetishizes everyone.

(Not wanting to name fandom because I'm paranoid people will find me out and I want to remain niceynicey.)

[personal profile] darkmanifest 2013-11-30 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, it's good to hear everyone's equal in that regard. Though I do wish there was more stuff where nobody ended up fetishized, but, small steps.
