Re: Craziest fandom you've personally ever been in

Transformers, and I don't even know where to start with the crazy shit. Death threats at Bob Skir, Raksha, Orson's World, miscellaneous board-split drama are all stuff that was before my time in the fandom. I've been around for the existence of the movies and the whole kit and kaboodles of wank that came with (and if I never see a discussion on the morals of Bayverse Optimus Prime and Autobot brutality, it will be too soon), one board stuffing an online ballot box to get a dick joke in the official character hall of fame, toy swapping, the prevalent mentality of entitlement a lot of collectors have, wank over friggin' video reviews of toys, that one guy who legally changed his name to Optimus Prime, and the one lady in the fandom who has delusions of being Optimus Prime's wife...

Really, take your pick. There's a lot of popcorn-worthy moments, but most of it is just face-in-hands and cringe-worthy stuff.

Oh man, yes, yes, a thousand times yes.
Decepticon apologists and Dinobot IQs and special snowflake fanfic authors.
And that's just the parts I can stand!

My TF fandom experience has been like 90% cool and laid-back and nice, but when it goes nuts, man does it hit the fan. I'm always surprised by how I always see stuff that has nothing to do with robots. A shame as I would be interested to see a Transformers shipping war. (M/SS and OP/SS fans occasionally taking potshots at each other just isn't big enough to count.)

IIRC, there is/was more than one lady who thinks she's married to Optimus Prime, but Bonita stopped a while ago. Was plenty disturbing while it lasted though. She had this one video where she showed off her collection, and it got unrelentingly creepy around the part where she said she only drinks out of cups with Optimus on them. Unforgettable.

I would have loved to have been around for Raksha. I poked around her site once and even though she's clearly bitter and crazy, she was pretty damn talented at writing fic. And the episode commentaries... very intelligent, even though they're often a laughable misinterpretation of what's happening on the screen. The assumptions that she makes and the way she twists logic into pretzels to get to her conclusion were unfailingly amazing. And a lot of her "proof" that Autobots are terrible and Decepticons are good is the same stuff that Decepticon apologists fans point to when explaining their preferences, and I've never known quite how to feel about that. But it is certainly fascinating!

Definitely agreed on the ratio of cool to nuts. Helps that I stick to primarily friends I've made and post at what is as far as I know the sanest of the big boards (The Allspark).

I'm surprised we haven't had a truly notable ship war for being a nearly 30-year-old fandom.

One of my favorite things about Transformers fandom is how cool we are about shipping. People can ship the craziest pairings and there's pretty much no fuss about it. I think it's because the canon is so uninterested in portraying romance that we don't have much basis for telling people they're doing it wrong when they ship stuff. None of it is going to become canon, so why not just have fun with it?

Or maybe, robots are simply so hot that everybody is too busy fapping to argue about it. :D
