Craziest fandom you've personally ever been in

(Anonymous) 2013-11-30 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
So, people can argue all night about which fandom is the craziest, but to be fair -- everyone's fandom experience is different. In large fandoms in particular, it's very difficult to experience all facets of a fandom. Usually, people encounter a certain slice of the fandom -- a circle of friends, comms, and events that they have fannishly experienced -- and their opinions of the fandom come from that.

So, all I'm asking is: for you, personally, what was the craziest fandom you've ever been in? What kinds of shit went down in it? Why? Did you participate, eat popcorn, or fume at the wank? Give us juicy details!

Supernatural. See below. : /

I do not participate, I just watch and shake my head.

Transformers, and I don't even know where to start with the crazy shit. Death threats at Bob Skir, Raksha, Orson's World, miscellaneous board-split drama are all stuff that was before my time in the fandom. I've been around for the existence of the movies and the whole kit and kaboodles of wank that came with (and if I never see a discussion on the morals of Bayverse Optimus Prime and Autobot brutality, it will be too soon), one board stuffing an online ballot box to get a dick joke in the official character hall of fame, toy swapping, the prevalent mentality of entitlement a lot of collectors have, wank over friggin' video reviews of toys, that one guy who legally changed his name to Optimus Prime, and the one lady in the fandom who has delusions of being Optimus Prime's wife...

Really, take your pick. There's a lot of popcorn-worthy moments, but most of it is just face-in-hands and cringe-worthy stuff.

Oh man, yes, yes, a thousand times yes.
Decepticon apologists and Dinobot IQs and special snowflake fanfic authors.
And that's just the parts I can stand!

My TF fandom experience has been like 90% cool and laid-back and nice, but when it goes nuts, man does it hit the fan. I'm always surprised by how I always see stuff that has nothing to do with robots. A shame as I would be interested to see a Transformers shipping war. (M/SS and OP/SS fans occasionally taking potshots at each other just isn't big enough to count.)

IIRC, there is/was more than one lady who thinks she's married to Optimus Prime, but Bonita stopped a while ago. Was plenty disturbing while it lasted though. She had this one video where she showed off her collection, and it got unrelentingly creepy around the part where she said she only drinks out of cups with Optimus on them. Unforgettable.

I would have loved to have been around for Raksha. I poked around her site once and even though she's clearly bitter and crazy, she was pretty damn talented at writing fic. And the episode commentaries... very intelligent, even though they're often a laughable misinterpretation of what's happening on the screen. The assumptions that she makes and the way she twists logic into pretzels to get to her conclusion were unfailingly amazing. And a lot of her "proof" that Autobots are terrible and Decepticons are good is the same stuff that Decepticon apologists fans point to when explaining their preferences, and I've never known quite how to feel about that. But it is certainly fascinating!

Definitely agreed on the ratio of cool to nuts. Helps that I stick to primarily friends I've made and post at what is as far as I know the sanest of the big boards (The Allspark).

I'm surprised we haven't had a truly notable ship war for being a nearly 30-year-old fandom.

Andromeda. Not only was it nuts but it was my first real fandom experience. About scared me off for a few years, let me tell you.

I was going to say none of them have been THAT crazy, then I remembered that I was a member of the BoE mailing list when all the stuff was going down. I remember when "Mr. Frodo" appeared and just assuming that VB had changed handles, since it seemed quite obvious, and I had no idea they were claiming it was someone else. I was taking live screencaps of the Oscars the first year the LotR movies were in the running, of every time they cut to a cast member and stuff, and sending them to OB during chat... wished I was close enough to take part in the charity work they were doing... then the list got quiet for awhile and I wandered off.

Then one day I loaded up FW and went "............................"

ATLA fandom when the show was airing, and I hung around Gaia Online around that time. Zutara happened. You can guess the rest.

Honestly tho I was never in ground zero-- deviantart, but the zutara stans were so annoying it still soured my experience.

Probably Supernatural, just for the sheer amount of wank. Even though I stayed away from it and had a small circle of friends to talk about the show with, it was next to impossible not to hear about the wank. (Back in the day it was all 'hating the newest love interest' and 'J2 4ever'. Guess I got out before things got even worse?)

I have a bad feeling that the Hannibal fandom may be heading the way of Supernatural & Sherlock. Possibly because there was a major influx of new fans of the show who were also into 'the big three'.

I really, really hope that the fans stay respectful of the actors & writers, and don't ask weird questions and send them smutfic. PLEASE, GOD.

Most other fandoms I've been in have been fairly small & quiet. I just post the occasional fic or fanart, and that's it.

Supernatural, by fucking far. I barely dipped my toe into the fandom and it was like opening a door into a howling abyss. What made me back away for good with my hands in the air was the endless RPS wank and that one person making those super insane photomanips of the actors. You know the one, that involved a lot of gaping anuses.

Probably supernatural, I was there when Dean/Castiel was new and the ship wars and lady character bashing was pretty nasty. It sadly doesn't seem like it's gotten better.

Harry Potter. Always and forever Harry Potter.

My friends, old comrades, gather 'round to hear my tale. You speak of fandom? You speak of wank? Of flamewars? All nothing compared to THE fandom. The Great Fandom. The Fandom to End All Fandom. I was there at the Potterdammerung, at the end of all things, and was banned from three separate comms as a casualty of the crossfire during the frantic, panicked, firey fallout between the first retreat and the subsequent rallying and strikeback of the losing forces of the shipping and horcrux wars. Ah, the tales of a mighty and noble battle long since gone. Terrible yet glorious, with such feats of honor acheieved and such grand friendships forged amidst the blood and tears and never-ending rivers of spooge flowing through the flame-seared trenches in that great summer of '07. Truly, the Fandom To End All Fandoms.

*sighs and softly whistles "The Girl I Left Behind Me"*

K-Pop fandom.

I'm in Harry Potter *and* Supernatural *and* Teen Wolf *and* Sherlock fandom. I was also in X-Files and LOTR, which did get pretty crazy. But believe me when I tell you that K-Pop fandom takes the damn crazy cake.

First there's the thing with that fan (or was it an anti-fan?) poisoning a member of a boyband (I know...). And then there's the nasty flamewars between fans of different groups, there are death threats to girlfriends and/or alleged girlfriends, there was the avalanche of 'go kill yourself' to that one homesick dude, there was also that one poor girl group member whose crotch got groped on TV (and there was no wank over this, for some reason?). The list goes on and on.

+ a billion, K-Pop fandom is fucking terrifying and no other fandom I've ever seen has gotten anywhere close to matching it. (And it was an anti-fan who tried to poison a member of TVXQ, if I recall correctly.)

I tend to hang on fringes, so I guess the craziest fandom for me would be pokemon. It's all trivial, but the arguments stress me out.

Compared to say Teen Wolf where I have maybe a toe dipped into it and no real knowledge.
