I was going to say none of them have been THAT crazy, then I remembered that I was a member of the BoE mailing list when all the stuff was going down. I remember when "Mr. Frodo" appeared and just assuming that VB had changed handles, since it seemed quite obvious, and I had no idea they were claiming it was someone else. I was taking live screencaps of the Oscars the first year the LotR movies were in the running, of every time they cut to a cast member and stuff, and sending them to OB during chat... wished I was close enough to take part in the charity work they were doing... then the list got quiet for awhile and I wandered off.

Then one day I loaded up FW and went "............................"

I don't understand any of this. Please explain?

It sounds like a really interesting story.

There is no possible way I could summarize this and adequately explain within the confines of a single comment. Literally, someone involved wrote a book about it. Long story short, some of the mods of a large LotR fandom mailing list went completely off the deep end, faked one's death only to replace her with a guy who looks just like her but is TOTALLY NOT HER GUYS REALLY, got actual celebrities involved, and screwed people out of thousands of dollars in the name of charitable causes. There was some stuff involved about people being reincarnations of celebrities who are still alive, too, and those celebrities also being reincarnations of hobbits, or something, I only found out about that later.

Fortunately other people have told the whole story in depth (which is how I found out), so if you want the full details, you can start here, but there's a lot of stuff that goes further in depth if you look around. ;)

I know not all of LotR fandom is this crazy, but boy, I just happened to fall in the wrong place at the wrong time...

The FFA wiki has a more up-to-date article on him with a ton of links:

Basically it's a decade-long story of scams and rather alarming cult behavior, so I hope you have your weekend free.

Ah, excellent, thank you. It's been so long since I went looking for the "whole" story (since I was sorta there at the beginning) I had no idea where the best compilation was. =)
