Re: health reassurance anyone?

It's reversible, but not without significant lifestyle changes and possibly medication. You can ask your doctor about it, since he/she presumably knows about your family history and realizes this is an issue to keep an eye on. I'm in a similar situation. What happened with me is that my doctor prescribed a low dosage of Pioglitazone/metformin (some people just get plain metformin) to help treat the blood sugar issues and advised me to cut back on sugars and bad carbohydrates as well as up my exercise. I get my blood tested (A1C) every 3-4 months and that remains stable, I go for longer without testing. I don't have to do any home tests or insulin injections.

These problems started when I was only a little older than you are. My advice is to attack it now because it won't get any easier with age. Even 15 minutes of exercise a day is beneficial and it may help with your blood pressure as well. Exercise bike, treadmill, or try a half hour walk, and eat healthier. You don't want to get on that type 2 diabetes merry-go-round. :(

Oh, and the medication does have some unpleasant side effects that vary from person to person, mostly a 2-3 week period of nausea and diarrhea. I wasn't affected much, but some people feel rather sick until their body adjusts to it.
