health reassurance anyone?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-30 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I'm following up woth my doctor in a week but I was at a jealth fair this week and I have high blood pressure and high fastinf blood sugar (120) and I'm really nervous. Diabetes runs in my family and I know I haven't bee cultivating good habits all this time. I'm in prediabetes range now and I can't find reliable consistent information on whether that's rebersible or just managable.

And I'm stressed which I lnow isn't good for my bp either. I've tried relaxing and breathing exercises but today thar just culminated in falli mg asleep and dreaming about wrecking my car.

I hate that I let myself get so far down a bad health path. I'm only 30.

If you don't mind, tell me more about your dream.

I was comimg up to a stop sign and was applying the brakes but even thoigh it was warm weather out, the road acted like it was icy and I jusr kept slowly moving forward umtil my front end was in the intersection and got hit. It was like slow motion where I had time to wish I could put the car in reverse but I didn't have time to actually do it. I wasn't hurt but it totaled my car.

Yeah my subconscious is not good at being subtle. Also sorry for typos. am on my phone.

Yeah, that wasn't subtle at all.

But maybe you shouldn't think your body as totaled. If you do have diabetes it's totally manageable now. I know that's not much of a comfort but perhaps it's slightly better than thinking you're a wreck.

I'm 2 years older than you, and kind of in the same boat. But you can bring it down a LOT just by going on a walk every day and watching what you eat. Eat things that lower your cholesterol, like almonds or oatmeal or pistachios. Make sure you get enough fiber and variety of vegetables. Keep under 2000 calories a day. I stayed under 1500 for 3 months and ended up losing 20 lbs, just doing all those things, and my BMI dropped a number, and my blood pressure went down a good amount. Don't beat yourself up! I believe in you! :3

Wat anon-above-me said. Learn more about cholesterols. I'm no medical person, but I had cholesterol problems before, and learning the basics helped me focus my efforts more effectively. And watch salt intake. Drink more water, which well make you feel more energetic and better all around, as well.

Also, if you're on any medications, check if they cause BP problems or 'metabolic syndrome', which raising blood sugar and cholesterol. There might be alternatives.

30's still young. My aunt is almost fifty, and she cut her cholesterol by a third in one year by getting more exercise and dropping some weight. Don't freak out!

I am in a medical field of study, and I can safely reassure you that diabetes is considered the only disease state that is truly reversible through diet and exercise.

However, you do have to diet and you do have to exercise, and not just occasionally either. If you want to see a change, you need to lose fat and gain muscle mass. If you would rather lose your vision and the sensation in your extremities, continue your current habits.

It's reversible, but not without significant lifestyle changes and possibly medication. You can ask your doctor about it, since he/she presumably knows about your family history and realizes this is an issue to keep an eye on. I'm in a similar situation. What happened with me is that my doctor prescribed a low dosage of Pioglitazone/metformin (some people just get plain metformin) to help treat the blood sugar issues and advised me to cut back on sugars and bad carbohydrates as well as up my exercise. I get my blood tested (A1C) every 3-4 months and that remains stable, I go for longer without testing. I don't have to do any home tests or insulin injections.

These problems started when I was only a little older than you are. My advice is to attack it now because it won't get any easier with age. Even 15 minutes of exercise a day is beneficial and it may help with your blood pressure as well. Exercise bike, treadmill, or try a half hour walk, and eat healthier. You don't want to get on that type 2 diabetes merry-go-round. :(

Oh, and the medication does have some unpleasant side effects that vary from person to person, mostly a 2-3 week period of nausea and diarrhea. I wasn't affected much, but some people feel rather sick until their body adjusts to it.
