Because it is like some evil necromancer resurrected both Scrappy Doo and Mel from Doctor Who and shoved them both in the body of a teenage girl, amped up the annoyance factor, gave it a double dose of whiny angst, then shoved the unholy creation into existence!

That's how you create a Dawn Summers.

Dawn Summers is a precious baby angel and nothing anyone can say will convince me otherwise.

She is honestly my 3rd or 4th favorite character on the show and I'm not even sorry.

I was surprised to discover that people hated Dawn. I thought she was annoying in a little sibling way, but I liked her and her storyline.

I wasn't surprised because I went into the series knowing that the three most hated characters were: Kennedy, Riley and Dawn.

But I loved Dawn.

Like idk why people are so hard on her. She has a LOT to deal with and she acts out in a pretty believable way. And sure she can be the Annoying Younger Sister sometimes, but she's funny and smart and she genuinely loves Buffy.

I don't get the Kennedy hate, she wasn't in the show long enough to develop enough character to hate. Other than "she isn't Tara" of course, and all the angry fans who got pissed that Joss killed a beloved character and refused to resurrect her simply because the fans demanded it and just replaced her instead. According to Whedonites it is a horrible thing if, when a character experiences loss, they eventually get over it, start moving on with their live and learn to love again. That is just bad storywriting according to the Whedonites.

I hate Kennedy because she thinks she knows everything, is ready for anything and takes glee from denigrating other people and calling them maggots.

Kennedy's story was not about Willow getting over Tara, though. Kennedy was a character shoved down people's throats that fans were told to like, as though they should be grateful for whatever lesbian relationship they were given. There was nothing natural or narratively consistent about Kennedy; she was exactly the sort of arrogant braggart that Willow would have avoided like the plague.

I don't care for her because I didn't care at all for the conceit they used in stuffing her in there and for me personally the show never did a good enough job of convincing me that Buffy and co. loved Dawn for who she was and not who their magic new memories said she was. I know mileage definitely varies on this, but for me I just can't accept the 'we have memories of it so that makes it real even though it isn't actually real' thing. Like, if they'd brought Dawn in as a brand new character and not done the monk thing, or if everyone had lost their past memories of Dawn after she found out who she was I feel like I would have warmed up to the character more. As it is I didn't like that the show treated her as if Buffy had always had a little sister for the past four seasons and gave her such a place of importance (sorry Joss, the monks didn't rewrite my memories). I know it's not the character's fault but it's just too big of a sticking point for me.

A lot of the people who hated her at the time were teenage girls, and they all insisted "but I'm not a screaming teen! I'm not!"

I have a kid sister. I had no problem whatsoever with Dawn.

So I think I really overidentified with her desire to want to fit in with her older sister's friends.

I have a kid sister, and she was nowhere near as obnoxious as Dawn started out.

Though on the plus side, Dawn does mature in the later seasons. And absolutely eerie, she looked like my kid sister at times in the last season which made me feel more endeared to her.

I'm going to blame monks for that.

Heeee, yes! Dawn is one of the only tween/teenagers on television to ever actually act her age. She is allowed to be a kiddo in all her kiddo glory. I love it.
