By the time she jumped off the tower in "The Gift", I honestly think that she, in part, viewed death as a relief.
So she goes from that to being happy in heaven, only to be dragged back into this world, dealing with being a mother figure now to Dawn and trying to figure out how to take care of herself and Dawn and save the world.
Whatever.
I loved Buffy's arc in season 6. I have never related more to a fictional depiction of depression.

That's how you create a Dawn Summers.

She is honestly my 3rd or 4th favorite character on the show and I'm not even sorry.

But I loved Dawn.
Like idk why people are so hard on her. She has a LOT to deal with and she acts out in a pretty believable way. And sure she can be the Annoying Younger Sister sometimes, but she's funny and smart and she genuinely loves Buffy.

So I think I really overidentified with her desire to want to fit in with her older sister's friends.

I'm going to blame monks for that.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-01 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)It was really the reward for her sacrifice; finality is the fate of a slayer, and the best one could hope was to go in her own terms. It's rather a dark theme; death is the only thing sure in a slayer's life, and sacrifice is the only way of making it meaningful.
And Buffy did it, she checked out in a ball of glory, she was done. She had her reward. And they took that away from her.
The interesting part of her arc in S6 (besides being an awesome allegory for depression) it was also about finding meaning again; Buffy was done. Death could not be her meaning no-more, cause she had already gone through that. So as long as she was on earth, she had to BE something more, about something else.
And I think that it was her death and stay in heaven what made her ultimately understand that she had to be change, break away from the circle of life and death of the slayer, and that makes the empowering theme of season 7 not only about women, but about Buffy transcending the slayer rules of death and rebirth with her own will (and Will ah!).
