I agree. There's nothing wrong with patriotic about your country. It's when you start thinking that everyone else should be just like your country that becomes the problem.

I think most the world side eyes American patriotism because they have their own history where their country's patriotism turned into invading and trying to colonize the world. So, they see Americans and are they are waiting for the same thing to happen there.

They don't get how it would be different for Americans. Americans have a love affair with their own country. It's more of a family love than a sterile, stoic devotion to their government. In fact, you ask most Americans, they aren't too pleased with their government but they love their country and the people in it. Much like a family where you may not always like your relatives because they drive you crazy but you love them.

Um, as a non-American, I can vouch for the "patriotism caused wars, genocides and colonisation" thing, but the thing is that American patriotism is also perceived as: "look, I'm better than you, you should be like me, forget your culture and customs to copy my model which is the best of the best, ever". Now, I'm not saying this is how American patriotism is as a whole, or is, altogether. This is how I sometimes see it, in certain areas of American media. This is not a purely American problem either, it's just more visible than in other countries because America has a much bigger international exposure...

/my 2 cents

It's more than a little ironic that, because people in other countries are fond of and affectionate towards their land, their customs, their way of life, they end up being opposed to and angry at American patriotism, IE American affection towards its land, its territory, and its way of life.

Not saying that it's anyone's fault - it's absolutely true that the tendency exists within American culture to be... exuberant in that way (to put it nicely). Just one of those unfortunate things.

I think it's part of how the US expresses it too. Like very few countries besides the US have regular families put their flag outside of their house. And I can see other countries disliking how we celebrate the 4th of July too.

Yeah, but over the top is something Americans do by nature.

We sent men to the moon and they played golf there. That right there is America in a nut shell. Other while countries were trying to get men into space and we sent men to the moon to casually play sports not because it was needed but because we could.

Just because they could and wanted to show the Eastern block that they could. "Get over here, suckers! You sent a dog, I sent golfers, your move."

Okay? It may be by nature but I still dislike the sheer quantity on certain days. Hence tumblr savior

and that one firefox program that saviors across the internet.

Have you read anything at all about the space race?

I sincerely doubt it.

Then after all that shit we had to do to get there, you'd understand those brave men deserved to relax for a moment and let Alan Shepard get the best drive in history.

Of course I understand. It was a joke. I can't believe that people think that I think that NASA did all that to send people to play sports on the moon. Sheesh.

I'm saying you've reduced a rather complex effort involving a lot of people with legitimate scientific interests to "This American astronaut played golf on the moon therefore getting to the moon was meaningless."

I mean if you think doing fun stuff with science that gets the attention of common people is just pointless dickwaving you must really fucking hate Bill Nye.

Well, the golf thing was a nice trick, but that isn't all of what the Apollo missions were about.

Really? I would have never guessed

I can't believe how many people thought I was serious about that comment.

I can't believe how many people thought I was serious about that comment.

It's getting harder and harder to tell the satire from the legitimately stupid these days. Especially when it comes to discussing space exploration. My apologies.

No, you did it because you had to show Russia you had a bigger space dick.

Well, in the realm of stuff "regular families" do, there's the thing where North Koreans basically have their dictator enshrined in their houses and wear pictures of him pinned to their lapels and schools stage huge productions in praise of him.

So in a compare-and-contrast sort of scenario, it's not surprising that people would side-eye typical American displays of patriotism too...

(Anonymous) 2013-12-01 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah the exuberent thing is not that exclusively American. It's just that you aren't really in the footbal world cup that you don't really notice it. Trust everyone gets their stupid flag shirts out when their team is playing.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-03 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
I think that's better defined as American exceptionalism and also failed foreign policy, rather than patriotism.
