Food discoveries

(Anonymous) 2013-12-01 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
What food has come into your life recently, F!S? New (or just new-to-you) products, new recipes, surprising combinations? Tell me of them, because food is a fascinating thing.

For my part, I have just discovered that Trader Joe's makes cheddar and horseradish potato chips. My sinuses are less than thrilled, but the rest of me is quite happy.

Chilli Con Carne (sp?)

I wasn't too impressed tbh. Will not have again.

You do realize that there are a lot of different recipes for chili [as it's usually called], that taste different enough that you might like some, right?

I'm sure there are, I don't care though. My experience was unimpressive and I will order something different next time rather than risk it.

I'm unlikely to come across it again anyway.

In my experience chile con carne is usually code for "dog food." I love chili with meat, so I don't know what it is about chili con carne that it tends to end up being awful.

The Old El Paso Mexican range has a new type of spicy and non-spicy rice, and the non spicy pack is delicious. I don't normally like peppers all that much but in this rice? Omnom give me all of it.

Chicago popcorn. It's that thing where you mix cheese popcorn and caramel popcorn and omg it's good.

Deep dish pizza, I've discovered, is a miracle of the universe.

A new recipe for sugar cookies that turned out perfectly and were delicious! No more thin crispy boring cookies for me.

When I was at the park the other day I plucked a couple of prickly pears off a cactus to bring home. They taste like beet/pomegranate and have seeds like gravel. It was very interesting.

Subway's Melted Cheese Nachos are lush and damn easy to make. Glorious.

I found out that a certain brand of kettle crisps they sell around here also has vegetable crisps. It's beetroot, parsnip and carrot crisps and they're delicious - even though I don't really like beetroot.

Also, I tried to put cardamom in my coffee recently and I really liked it - but drinking coffee is a bad idea, so I won't do it often I guess.

And I was sceptical at first, but I have some smoked sea salt and never really used it - even though it's awesome. Turns out: Salted caramel is even better with a tiny bit of the smoke-salt. Yum!

They just started stocking these at the local store...

Largely makes up for the fact that the same store stopped stocking the Lindor Dark Assortment bags that were the only way to get the coffee truffles. Not quite as good, but still pretty good.

Same place also now makes lemon-blueberry crumble bars at the bakery, yummmmm.

As for surprises and recipes, the gluten-free vegan brownies I made using black beans (not because I'm gluten-free or vegan, just out of sheer "SERIOUSLY?!" at the recipe) are way, way better than any brownies I have ever had before. And they're made from BEANS. WTF.

Care to share your brownie recipe?

Here you go! Seriously takes five minutes with a food processor to prepare for baking, too. Since I'm not vegan or gluten-free, I didn't have fancy stuff like flax seed around, but I also didn't have eggs, so I used a 4oz cup of unsweetened applesauce instead. I was out of vanilla extract too, so I just squeezed in a little honey for added sweetness. Came out amazing - it really is true you'd never know they're made from beans - and since there are no perishables in it, you can lick the bowl and spoon clean. ;)

Next time I make them, I'm thinking of either putting in a little cayenne pepper (I like spicy chocolate, and it seems like it would go especially well with the black bean base) or some instant mocha powder.

Swiss chard. So far, I'm not liking it as much as I like kale and spinach.

I've recently started really loving lemon as a flavor for desserts/sweet things - lemon cookies, lemon ice cream, etc. After years of being a chocolate person, I don't know where this came from.
