Did we watch the same show? The animation was bad, maybe you can say that it looked beautiful thanks to the filters they used, but the animation was bad.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-03 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Fucking anything is better than the art in the manga. Crayon Shin-chan is a visual masterpiece in comparison.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-03 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Aww, I love the art in the manga. It's roughness and non-stylized look totally adds to the atmosphere and 'creepiness' of the story for me.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-03 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. The art actually really fits the story.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-03 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Compared to the manga? You must be joking. Here, let me help:

Anime: (I tried to avoid spoilers)

Manga: (Random pages from the first volume, still trying to avoid spoilers)

http://oi44.tinypic.com/70gaw8.jpg

http://oi44.tinypic.com/ogdvur.jpg (lol, those expressions)

http://oi41.tinypic.com/2822juw.jpg (I have no freaking idea what that body is doing. Muscles will cover that up, right? Clearly.)

http://oi44.tinypic.com/2zp8fie.jpg (and those definitely look like human faces and proportionate bodies, yep, no doubt.)

Face it anon, the manga has shitty art. And in case you don't mind spoilers, you can go look at one of the later pages in chapter 50--still shitty, if marginally better at expressions.

No shit Sherlock, of course that the anime will have better art, those are professional animators and Isayama is a guy that can't draw and probably shouldn't have been allowed to draw the story (I still don't understand why Kodansha forced him to write the story but have another guy drawing the art).

That doesn't change the fact that the animation in the anime was bad. There were some good scenes, of course, and the good scenes were marvelous, but overall it was far from good. Friendly reminder that they weren't able of producing the episodes in time so they had to outsource a couple of them and have a recap episode that wasn't supposed to be there.

Fucking. Duh. This is what everyone says, so why are you arguing with it? The show was animated by professional animators who churned out really nice animation. Please, find me the bad animation you speak of, since there must be so much of it if you keep harping on it.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-03 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Do you even know what animation is? Hint: it's not related to the drawings, backgrounds or proportions.

Bad animation: just watch episode 19. They reused the same Levi still 3 fucking times in 3 different scenes. Then you have the infamous purple bricks during the boulder arc. That episode had a couple of unfinished scenes too, it was pretty obvious.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-03 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no! Reused stills! The absolute horror! And in two whole episodes?

You're right, that completely negates the otherwise amazingly done movements, detailed backgrounds, and vast improvements on the art style in general. I don't know why I doubted you. Hint: it's because you're an idiot.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-03 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Holy shit, you are retarded, aren't you? And even worse, a fanboy that has no fucking idea about animation (if you can't see how abusing stills in ANIMATION is bad, you're beyond salvation). You're like a 5 years old, put some beautiful scenes and you'll trick him into ignoring all the crappy ones.

Babby's first epic anime, am I right?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-03 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Don't bother.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-03 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Don't have a heart attack, anon. They're clearly just winding you up.

da

(Anonymous) 2013-12-03 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
i haven't seen the show in question, but you do realize that reusing stills and even entire animated sequences is something done all the time in animation? look up what "bank cels" are.

I can't seem to track down the pilot chapter of SnK but believe it or not, the art in it is BETTER. The faces especially. So I can see why Isayama got signed on, though I don't know what the fuck happened.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-03 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like you're trying to over-validate why you prefer the anime to the manga here...

(Anonymous) 2013-12-03 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
People usually say that when someone actually brings links to prove a point. Funny, huh?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-03 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
But everyone knows that Isayama sucks with bodies and proportions, and that his art is just all-around pretty rough. There were jokes on tumblr after chapter 52, pointing out how Levi was floating in his chair next to Erwin's bed. You didn't need to find and post all the images to prove that point. I don't think anyone would argue with you that the art in the manga is better than in the anime.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-03 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
It looks to me like linkanon is confusing art with animation. The art in the anime is (a lot) better than in the manga, but that is completely unrelated to animation. Good animation is (as much as I dislike them) Kyoani's shows or Little Witch Academia, not what the anime of SnK did.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-03 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
No, I'm not--that's why I linked gifs, not stills. Animation is about movement, and good transitions. The anime has that. If you guys are so bothered by my use of the word beautiful, I'll scale it back, but seriously? The animation is really good.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-03 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'm also arguing that the animation in the anime isn't bad, which is what the comment I replied to said.

But...you're completely right when you say I need to stop being so invested. It's not worth the argument, really; I just hate manga purists.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-03 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
I just hate manga purists.

Same. I like both. I'd be bored to tears if everything was literally exactly the same between them.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-03 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
I never read the manga but the animation was far from good. I remember people making fun of it in a certain website when the show was airing.

There's hating manga purists, and then there's refusing to acknowledge criticism about an anime you like.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-03 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes an anime will divert in questionable ways from the manga due to pacing, pandering to fans etc. For instance I love Hanji, but in the anime they relied too much on her eccentricity for her characterization and left out one of the most important scenes for her characterization for more Levi (like that was needed). The anime also ruined Eren's character development by saying that he needed to embrace his 'inhuman' side (his anger etc.), where the manga is showing him maturing and growing up.
It's okay if you like the anime (and for the most part the anime did follow the manga) but I think criticizing the SnK anime is legitimate and goes beyond "manga purism".
Also the anime had Erwin/the Survey Corps unnecessarily burning down a town/killing people or whatever happened in the final episode. What the heck?
