Cliques don't spring out of the earth fully-formed, though. If you see a group of awesome people, just peering at them from outside the clubhouse and seething in envy isn't going to get you in. Be awesome yourself. If your first reaction is to say, "But I can't!" then you're definitely doomed. Be awesome. None of those people were born doing what they do, it's a skill they picked up along the way.

If you honestly feel you have no interests/skills and no way to develop any (although really? Nothing at all?), then at least be a good conversationalist, listener, and a person who appreciates what others do. Lobbing in the random compliment is nice, but it's purely a one-time interaction that doesn't offer any reason to continue it. That's why all you get is a polite "Thank you".

Bottom line is, if you want cool friends, you have to be a cool friend. Just waiting around until someone reads your mind and realizes how incredible you are doesn't work.
