Agreed, OP.

It depends on what you follow. I don't really get all the hate for tumblr, as though livejournal was some kind of haven of sweetness and light.

Yep.

Everybody on here likes to talk about how great lj was back in the day and how easy it was to use and how it fostered such a great sense of community that you just can't get on tumblr, but that wasn't my experience at all. I'm hugely grateful for tumblr because I could not for the life of me figure out how to get 'into' fandom on lj, let alone find fandom on lj, but I picked up tumblr's interface and etiquette in about a month and now I have a really great close-knit group of fandom friends there. I guess it's all about what kind of interface you can pick up most easily and naturally.

(although I do have a lot of sympathy for the folks who just cannot make tumblr work for them, because that was exactly how I felt about lj and it sucks.)

And which tags you follow.

With the exception of a few things that are a direct result of the site's infrastructure, virtually every single annoying thing that people complain about on Tumblr predates it by a good margin.

Many of them even predate livejournal.

It's all comparative, really. ;) Tumblr has different problems than LJ, and a lot of people who were used to battling the problems of LJ dislike the problems with tumblr a lot more. LJ's problems...we kind of got used to them, even felt a bit of affection for them. They were familiar.
