Agreed, OP.

It depends on what you follow. I don't really get all the hate for tumblr, as though livejournal was some kind of haven of sweetness and light.

yeah, it's almost like the very nature of the website makes it so that any two given users may very well never run into each other because they don't frequent the same places, or something

crazy that

(Anonymous) 2013-12-04 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Well, Tumblr is only as good as the people you follow. :)

I follow people who some of the people here would probably consider SJWs (because of how that term gets applied to all kinds of people) but I still haven't come across those assholes who follow you around and harass you constantly that I've heard so much about.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-04 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I've unfollowed some people when their posts started getting a little crazy, but I've never been harassed or anything. Live and let live imo.

It depends, you can see a lot of that stuff without being directly involved though. Recently some of the people I follow have been talking about some chick in the SPN fandom that left Tumblr because she was being harassed/sent hate mail.

I love that font, too, OP

(Anonymous) 2013-12-04 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
but I never use it for my secrets, because if it isn't huge, it's kind of annoying to read.

Good for you, OP. For my part, it seems that anybody I follow is going to have a 70% chance of spewing out/reblogging some stupid unresearched, uneducated post about how [insert group] is so oppressed and whatnot. I've met loads of great people there, but I've also met a lot of horrible people. I'm kind of impressed you've never met them tbh.

My experience has been pretty much the same. And hell, remember when LJ had a reputation for being a wall-to-wall wankfest? Because I had a good experience there, too, until the site itself started going downhill.

All online communities can be fun if you don't hang around with dipshits!

(Also, goddammit, tumblr is for blurbs and pictures. The people who use it as a primary blog are using it wrong, and the people who complain about it are trying to use it wrong. I hope the next internet hub is more balanced.)

poor font choice, tbh.

But as for the secret, tumblr is huge and I think it just depends on who you interact with. I dislike it more because of its format and user-interface than any people there. I mean I've seen links to crazy-ass posts, but those are just a drop in a river of users, so I don't think they speak for the site as a whole.

Well, all I did was innocuously following some blogs I'd seen around that had pretty, oft-reblogged pictures. Then the text posts started coming in.

It all depends on which fandoms you're in.

I'm in a relatively small fandom that doesn't have much of a presence on LJ, dreamwidth, AO3, or any of the other usual places. There are a handful of people on tumblr who consistently make hilarious posts about that fandom, but they're all raging SJWs. In between the awesome fandom-related posts are reblogs of special snowflake rants and petty whining masquerading as spreading awareness of social issues. Seeing all that untagged SJW crap on my dash is annoying, but I'm not going to unfollow those people because their fandom posts make my day (and they're pretty much the only active blogs in the fandom). I can assure you I am far from the only person in this situation.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-04 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Your experience sounds a lot like mine... until two months ago, when some SJWs found one of my small fandoms. They got bored of it soon, luckily, but for a while it was as bad as people say when they talk about tumblr.

Somehow or another, someone you follow who had been normal starts reblogging some of those posts, and soon they turn into one of them.

It's certainly one of those things where it depends on who you follow I think. I don't see any SJW stuff but I do get extreme character bashers sometimes(and that's not through following people that hate a character but people responding to the hate).

I like tumblr well enough for the ease of sharing visual fanworks, but like any website it has it's toxic parts.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-04 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
the reality is the people who cry and whine about how terrible the SJWs are are actually shitty people themselves who are upset because a random text post called them out on shit they think but never openly say.

Same, OP. I guess we're just lucky? I mean, my main fandom is not without wank, but it's not generally of the SJW kind, and I've never been in the middle of it. Easy enough to ignore it and block people anyway. I've seen far more wankfests on lj in the past that I've ever run across on Tumblr. But everyone has different experiences, and I can understand people not liking the format there too. But for me, Tumblr has been so positive. The format really appeals to me, I've had more fun in fandom there in the past couple years than I've had ever before, and I've found it so much easier to connect with and get to know people there than I ever did on lj. So, yeah, I'm always sad to see it get so much hate too. But it's a big site with a lot of different people, so it's not surprising that people get turned off by the not-so-great parts.

It's all in how you use the site, like with anything else.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-04 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on who you follow and if you track/follow tags. It's really very very easy to find crazy blogs or asshole blogs or SJW blogs or a blog that has it all! But it's also pretty easy to just have cool fandom people and a good time all around. If you stick to your little corner, of course you'll only have the goodtimes experience.

People tend to exaggerate. If you managed to cultivate a grief-free dashboard and list of followers, good for you. Still, Tumblr's bad reputation is well-earned. There are some nasty blogs and people on there, and the problem is that they are loud.

It all depends on what tags you look in and who you've followed. I've followed a few people and then their SJWness crept up on me. I might have to unfollow a few more, but I love their non SJW posts, so it makes me sad.

Same here, except that I already had fandom friends. I just savior certain words and unfollow people who start posting things I don't want to see, and I have no problems there. I also look through people's blogs pretty thoroughly before following them, like an anon says to do upthread.
