It's just too easy to get sucked into an infinite feedback loop on Tumblr. It usually ends up with 500+ people all reblogging the same two things and working each other up into a nice frothy rage and then someone compares the other side to Hitler.

The best tactic is to not centralize. Follow lots of things and lots of people, and make sure that your dash doesn't end up 100% one fandom/interest.
