Well, all I did was innocuously following some blogs I'd seen around that had pretty, oft-reblogged pictures. Then the text posts started coming in.

My way of keeping the whole thing in check is going through ten to fifteen pages of their blog before deciding to follow. If you're unsure, don't follow them - unless they're making original content, there surely are better blogs around.

Also some people will delete stuff like text posts, so checking their blog a few times before following can also help.

Try the Mute extension on XKit. You don't get any text posts from muted users.
