tw: lethal accidents

(Anonymous) 2013-12-04 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
There's a stretch of highway near my parents' home that is quite possibly the most dangerous piece of road on the east coast.

A friend of ours was taking this highway into town with a friend of his on Christmas day; he was the passenger. The driver of a flatbed truck, in the lane to their right, made a sudden left turn across their path. The passenger side of the car our friend was riding in was crushed, and our friend suffered massive head injuries, of which he died within hours.

In his defense, the driver of the truck had the gall to say "But...my GPS said to turn left then!" As if, you know, GPS were a substitute for looking where you're going.

It baffles me that this is not treated as vehicular homicide.

I swear I'm not making this up.

Holy shit, anon, that's horrible. I'm so sorry that happened.

I can't believe it either. That's manslaughter/negligent homicide (whichever applies - I'm not an expert) like how can you excuse not taking 0.5 seconds to look out your damn window

that's straight-up rage inducing augh

It's just unimaginable to me. Apparently, the driver of the flatbed truck was in a hurry to get to the scene of an earlier accident in the area, so that he would get to tow the disabled car. And for that...
