BAD DRIVER RAGE THREAD

[personal profile] diet_poison 2013-12-04 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
So today, for the second time since I started driving about six years ago, I got flipped off.

I'm not upset about that (lol) but it's discouraging the way it happened. If you're familiar with those parking lots that have alternating one-way lanes with zig-zag parking spaces (I am, and I don't like them very much but I know how they work) I was trying to turn onto one, going the correct way (I use that particular lane out of habit when I do my grocery shopping but I double-check the arrow too) this girl was trying to drive out of it, going the wrong way and crowding up the lane, and basically making a stupid and dangerous driving error. I honked at her, and she flipped me off.

This is far from the first instance of me encountering bad drivers in this town. It seems to have a higher proportion of them than my home city, though that's not exempt by any means. (The other flip-off was this summer, when I was going straight on a green light and a guy turned right on red in front of me with me being so close that I had to slam on my breaks. I honked, he stuck his hand out the window and gave me the bird.)

I remember one time, about a year after I started driving, that I got honked at after making what was also a pretty dangerous error. I didn't flip off the honker. I was startled, then took a good hard look at the error I made and made sure not to make it again. Because when you're driving, you have to put your pride on the shelf. Messing up isn't about losing your Head Bitch status or whatever. It could cost people their LIVES.

So, f!s, does anyone else have any bad driver stories to share? It can be a time where you witnessed bad driving, were the victim of it, or even were the person who made a mistake (as long as you learned from it instead of being a dick!). Do bad drivers make you RAEG as much as I do? It's one thing to get annoyed when someone slows you down, which is a frequent occurrence for me (I like to drive on the faster end of the speed spectrum, if you will) but I'd rather have that every day than people who make life-endangering mistakes and then are too self-absorbed to take responsibility for it.

And on the less-life-threatening end of things, it does annoy me to be stuck behind someone super slow, especially going below the speed limit on a one-lane street, which happens annoyingly often. Or having two trucks pass each other on the highway. The other day I was in the left lane and a semi passed another semi in front of me. The semi on the left had their speed set to what seemed to be 65mph cruise control. For reference, the speed limit is 65 for trucks and 70 for everyone else. I usually go about 80 on the left lane on this road (which is an interstate).

For reference, I'm in the USA, so the left lane is the passing lane.

That truck-passing thing is legitimately the reason why I am glad my state doesn't have split speed limits. It's bad enough with the existing cruise control races, don't add to that with making it happen at 15mph slower than the flow of traffic. It's dangerous, yo.

What I hate the most with super slow people is when someone makes a really close turn in front of you and basically cuts you off, and then proceeds to go like ten below the speed limit.

Those people suck. A few years ago I worked at a mall. It was during Christmas when finding a parking spot is next to impossible. After driving up and down the aisles looking for a spot, I saw a person leaving. I left them room to leave the space, put on my turn signal and waited. as soon as the car left, a guy zoomed into the space from the other direction. I was so pissed, especially because I had to go to work and he was just there to shop. I waited for him to get out of his car and them told him he was an asshole. His response was "at least I got the space." I really wanted to key his car but I'm not 12 so I ended up doing nothing.

I've also been cut off plenty of times and had the one-way lanes, driver going the wrong way experience that you mentioned. I used to live in Atlanta, though, and the drivers there suck.

aughhhhhh, that would be so rage-inducing.

I know that Atlanta is notorious for horrible traffic issues. Not surprising that bad drivers would go along with that. :|

One time it was bumper to bumper traffic. We were moving, but slowly, and it was a dangerous situation in that if we stopped or slowed down or sped up we ran the risk of hitting someone or someone hitting us.

This girl in a car in the onramp was trying to merge into my lane, and she was yelling at me and waving at me trying to get me to let her in front of me. I wasn't going to do that because of the fucking hooplehead behind me riding my ass.

She threw her coffee across the hood of my car.

(Friend of mine heard about it later and said "so I hear you like your coffee on the go.")

NO ONE KNOWS HOW TO FUCKING MERGE FROM THE FEEDER ESPECIALLY AT WM CANNON AND I-35 AND IT PISSES ME OFF.

Speed up or slow down, jerkoffs. You can get in front or behind me, but you can stay the same speed as me.

When I was test driving cars the salesdude knew I wasn't from Austin because I didn't meander or dawdle and got to where I was going. Apparently growing up driving in Houston means I learned not to fuck around.

Anyway, most of my complaints are regarding people just not... going.

Surviving driving in Houston is a fucking badge of honor. So many freaking stupid ass people that endanger my life -daily-. Ugh.

And who meanders on the road? That's how you get your ass in a wreck. I've never understood people that putter out into the intersection after a red light. Dude, get the hell out of oncoming traffic dumbass! You're in Houston! People run red lights every 0.3 seconds!

Not sure if this is part of what you're talking about, but I hate it when I'm in a situation (like a 4-way stop) and someone else has the right-of-way and they keep waving at me to go even when I indicate that they should go. I'm not going to just leap out there when it's not my turn dumbass. I get that you're trying to do me a favor, but actually you're slowing EVERYONE down by not going when it's your turn.

tw: lethal accidents

(Anonymous) 2013-12-04 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
There's a stretch of highway near my parents' home that is quite possibly the most dangerous piece of road on the east coast.

A friend of ours was taking this highway into town with a friend of his on Christmas day; he was the passenger. The driver of a flatbed truck, in the lane to their right, made a sudden left turn across their path. The passenger side of the car our friend was riding in was crushed, and our friend suffered massive head injuries, of which he died within hours.

In his defense, the driver of the truck had the gall to say "But...my GPS said to turn left then!" As if, you know, GPS were a substitute for looking where you're going.

It baffles me that this is not treated as vehicular homicide.

I swear I'm not making this up.

Holy shit, anon, that's horrible. I'm so sorry that happened.

I can't believe it either. That's manslaughter/negligent homicide (whichever applies - I'm not an expert) like how can you excuse not taking 0.5 seconds to look out your damn window

that's straight-up rage inducing augh

My friends and I had gone to Orlando to go clubbing, and were driving home at not so dark thirty. While driving north on I-4 (a six-lane highway there), I was getting blinded by the headlights behind us - and I wasn't driving. Suddenly, a car whips around us, swerving back and forth across the road. Something flew out of the window, hitting the windshield, making the driver swerve. The trash kept flying out of their window, and the car kept swerving back and forth in front of us, so we couldn't get around it.

I finally realized that someone was destroying a cassette tape, and the stuff hitting the windshield was the ribbon in the tape. Then the plastic bits came out, hitting the windshield.

My friend in the passenger seat was leaning out the window now, screaming at the other car, and she got flipped off, and the car sped up and disappeared in a knot of traffic farther ahead.

The driver was still picking tape ribbon out of her wipers days later.

Another time, I was driving my housemate to the airport on one of toll roads, which were only semi-regulated by the cops regarding speed, as there was generally no one on them - which meant it was the best way to avoid Orlando traffic and get to the airport at a decent time.

A Humvee came screaming up behind us and nearly ran over my pickup before the driver realized we were there. The Humvee swerved around us, blasting the horn, and roared on past us, going at least twice the speed limit. The Humvee vanished ahead of us, and we kept up a steady speed.

About fifteen minutes later, before we reached the exit ramp to get to the airport, we saw the same Humvee pulled over on the side of the road by a county sheriff.

We drove by, waving, and laughed all the way to the airport.

I kind of hate right turn on red people sometimes. When I go to work there's one fairly busy four-way intersection where I make a left turn and I swear so many damn people seem to think that somehow their right on red trumps my green left turn arrow. I once had to swerve and briefly crossed the yellow line into the turn lane of people going the other way (thankfully no one was in that lane at the time) because some asshole not only did a right on red they had no room for, they did an illegal turn right on red -- I had a green arrow and was in the far left turn lane and a lady on the other side of the street did a right on red into the far lane, nearly hitting me. I honked at her and she just waved her hand out the window like "oopsy I nearly killed you tee hee" and it pissed me off so much.

People trying to make turns they don't have room for annoys me in general. On my way home I drive down a fairly busy road that's two lanes in either direction. If you're trying to make a left from one of businesses that line the road it can be really hard, I get that, but I've seen a lot of people who notice that no one's coming from one direction and so they make the turn and I have to slam my brakes because they didn't bother/didn't care to check both ways. Once a guy flipped me off because I honked at him since he almost hit me. He had to stop in a turn lane (if he'd gotten in the actual lane he would have slammed right into me) and basically drove alongside me for a bit and was apparently pissed that I wouldn't let him go ahead of me. Like, dude, I have the right of way, here. You don't get to flip me off.

On the other hand I am also a petty and vindictive driver who sometimes likes pissing irritating people off. Once a lady honked at me because I apparently didn't turn fast enough for her (I was actually getting ready to do a right on red and had basically just looked both ways and was moving to hit the gas when she started honking) so I deliberately sat and waited at the red light until it changed even though there was no traffic at all coming from the other direction. I was watching her through the rear view mirror the whole time and she was just having a shitfit, it was great.

one time this lady was trying to turn left out from a gas station onto a busy road (one lane each way, idk what that's called. standard road kind of deal) that has no traffic light in my small town. for some reason she decided not to wait until traffic was clear both ways, and instead pulled her car all the way into the lane closest to her as though all the people driving in the lane she wanted were going to stop and let her through (???). so I'm innocently driving along, see her sitting in the road like the idiot she is, waiting to turn into traffic, and hit the brake in plenty of time with no choice but to wait for her to move. AND SHE TURNS HER HEAD, SEES ME WAITING PATIENTLY, AND FLIPS ME OFF. what the actual fuck??? so I decided to sit there honking over and over to annoy her until she finally left. new england driving<3

When there's a lane merging ahead and here's a sign announcing that the lane is merging ahead so all the reasonable people that aren't turning or assholes stick to the one lane but then there's always SOMEONE who speeds through the empty lane and cuts in front of everyone at the last second at the merge. Ugh.

Oh my god you have no idea what you've unleashed.

People in my city DO NOT KNOW HOW TO TURN.

When you're turning right at the lights (we drive on the left here in Australia) what you're supposed to do is roll up PAST THE WHITE LINE so when a gap in traffic comes up you can quickly dart across. BUT SOME PEOPLE DON'T DO THIS. They park their asses way behind the white line and, shock and surprise, there's hardly a gap big enough to let them make that much longer turn.

And so despite having a million people behind them waiting to turn, they only manage to make it through when the lights turn orange, meaning that they wasted so much fucking time that they left everyone else high and dry while they managed to make their turn.

But sometimes it's worse. The light turns orange AND THEY STILL DON'T TURN. An entire green light wasted because some dumb fucker doesn't know the goddamn road rules! I usually lean on my horn when that happens and 99% of the time they act all offended/confused because as far as they're concerned they're only supposed to turn when the world rolls out a red carpet for them.

I was once stuck behind someone who did this for TWO green lights. If I was closer I would have gotten out of my car to yell at them, but luckily the cars ahead of me harassed them so much they gave up on trying to turn and drove straight.

As for a bad driver story, my family and I were driving along the state highway where the max speed is 120km. Some dude up ahead had missed his turn, so he wanted to do a u-turn. He decided to do this by coming to a DEAD FUCKING STOP in the middle of the highway and put his blinker on, waiting for a gap in the opposing traffic so he could do a u-turn. My dad managed to haul ass into the other lane, but my god the people behind us just barely managed to get out of this fucker's way in time.

I as driving on a freeway (three lanes) and was on the middle one. The person in front of me was really slow and kept getting slower, so I switched to the faster lane. I definitely looked very carefully if there was someone behind me, but didn't see anyone. There was a very long-stretched bend in the road, so I would have seen anyone coming from behind if they had stuck to the speed limit (~80mph I think. I have to convert from km/h). The guy that came from behind though, was very much over the speedlimit (I estimate around 110?) so I couldn't possibly have been able to see him before veering into the other lane because of the bend in the road.

So naturally, he had to slow down a bit, and he really was pissed about that. I got back into the other lane as soon as I had passed the car in front of me so he could drive on at his original speed. But instead of doing just that, he pulled over pretty close in front of me and slammed on the breaks. At over 80, on a freeway, with someone else behind me. I was really lucky that the car behind me was so slow. So basically, he provoked an accident because he was pissed about having to slow down a little. He drove on after that. I really wish I'd had someone else in the car with me because with a witness, I would have sued the asshole.

A few months ago I was driving home on a very long straight stretch - you can see everything for ages. There was no one on the road except for me and someone way in the distance ahead of me. Then this car roars up behind me and sits there, honking and flipping me off, for a couple minutes, before zooming past me. What kills me is that this was a four lane highway, it's not like he couldn't have just ... gotten in the passing lane rather than sitting behind me and being an asshole.

I once got told to "learn to drive, bitch" by a girl who had rolled down her window with one hand while clutching her cell phone in the other, and this was after she was trying to run her car into me at a two-way intersection where I had the right of way.

So I told her in a kind and graceful manner,

"FUCK YOU"

Not my shining moment, but I have to admit. I hate. I hate. I HATE when people use cell phones while driving. Talking, texting, hands-free, I don't care. It's all bad. It's all distracting. And everyone in the driver seat is operating a machine that weighs thousands of pounds FFS. Just because people ought to be defensive drivers doesn't give others a green light (haha) to be fucking stupider and more careless than they need to be.
