(Anonymous) 2013-12-04 11:56 am (UTC)(link)As I said earlier, I have read the books and I love them. I even love "The Silmarillion" and wish they would make a movie of that, though we're probably going to have to wait until book hipster Christopher Tolkien dies.
Yes, you are "allowed" to not like the movies. They weren't perfect ("Nobody tosses a Dwarf!" anyone?) You are not "allowed" to insult me for liking them: "LBR it just means your easy to please and have low standards." Or check out that post below us which claims "No sane book fan can watch these movies or care for the shit done there." THIS is the attitude I was directing my spite against.
And the thing is. I don't think Tolkien himself would care half as much as the purists about the changes. He once said that his fans are "involved in the stories in a way that I am not." Christ, Christians and Jews aren't bothered about popular Biblical films altering their goddamned Holy Text as much as some Tolkienistas are at the changes made by the Peter Jackson films.
