(Anonymous) 2013-12-04 02:07 am (UTC)(link)People who read the book are allowed to have expectations and they are ALLOWED to be disappointed if those expectations are subpar. They are ALLOWED to be disappointed if something they look forward to in the book is altered. Especially in cases like The Hobbit or LotR, these books are peoples childhood so of course they hold it close to their hearts.
Just because people who have only seen the movie don't have any point of reference does not make you a better or more tolerant person. Which is why it's so cute seeing these adaption-only people parading around like speshul snowflakes as if liking the adaption is so edgy and progressive or whatever shit they think they are being. LBR it just means your easy to please and have low standards.
Also unrelated but this kinda reminds me of the situation in the Shingeki no Kyojin fandom. Manga vs Anime-only fans. SnK anime-only fans are so cute in their spite because of their refusal to read the manga they get spoiled and get butthurt about it. I can only laugh at their disappointment because they brought it upon themselves for entering a fandom where people are up to date with the manga!
Protip:Don't go into a fandom and expect everyone to censor themselves for the anime-only ppl.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-04 11:56 am (UTC)(link)As I said earlier, I have read the books and I love them. I even love "The Silmarillion" and wish they would make a movie of that, though we're probably going to have to wait until book hipster Christopher Tolkien dies.
Yes, you are "allowed" to not like the movies. They weren't perfect ("Nobody tosses a Dwarf!" anyone?) You are not "allowed" to insult me for liking them: "LBR it just means your easy to please and have low standards." Or check out that post below us which claims "No sane book fan can watch these movies or care for the shit done there." THIS is the attitude I was directing my spite against.
And the thing is. I don't think Tolkien himself would care half as much as the purists about the changes. He once said that his fans are "involved in the stories in a way that I am not." Christ, Christians and Jews aren't bothered about popular Biblical films altering their goddamned Holy Text as much as some Tolkienistas are at the changes made by the Peter Jackson films.
