Yawn. I thought it was book 'purists', not 'hipsters', that were the source of all evil in Tolkien fandom anyway.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-04 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
At this point I'm loving Tauriel purely out of spite at the ungodly amount of hate that she's been getting.

Just ignore them? I mean it IS annoying when your favorite book is turned into a movie and bastardized (partially or completely). Imagine if the novelization of your favorite movie was changed!

Forever bitter about World War Z.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-04 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Or they could ignore the movies.

Hahaha, I haven't even seen World War Z: The Movie and yet I'm bitter -.- Bonus points for them ruining the only zombie apocalypse story I've ever enjoyed.

I refuse to watch World War Z because I know I will do nothing but bitch endlessly on how badly they fucked up such a great story. HOW CAN YOU FUCK UP THE ONLY GOOD ZOMBIE STORY AAAAAAHHHH.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-04 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Man, fuck that. If I don't like the movies, I'm going to say so. I agree that it's kind of dumb to treat the original text as though its sacrosanct, but at the same time, you know, I kind of think the movies aren't that good, and the fact that they also changed a lot from the books (in addition to not being that good) makes it even harder for me to enjoy them. Don't see why that's such an offensive opinion.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-04 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Bless you for using the word "sacrosanct". I needed it for my writing project and I've been wracking my brains all day trying to remember the word that started with "s" and meant something sacred.

The Hobbit movies are your favorites? Huh. I mean, that's cool -- I haven't seem them myself so maybe they are amazing, what do I know! It's just that I'm always surprised when people pick such a recent thing as their ultimate favorite movie, y'know? I hope that makes sense... I'm really not trying to diss your taste or anything!

Anyways, I find it kinda funny that people are complaining that they aren't faithful to the book, since that's the reason Viggo Mortensen turned down a role.

Tauriel could shoot Smaug's ball off with a shotgun, and it still wouldn't be as bad as "a red sun rises - blood has been spilled last night."

I'm not entirely sure Peter Jackson & co understand elves. I mean, I'm pretty sure I don't entirely understand elves, but I don't think Jackson does, either.

What tears? I'm not trashing your precious favorite films. I think they're perfectly fine films, if you happen to like that sort of thing.

Just don't ask me to say that I like them, or that I think they're good representations of any of what I liked about the books.

I don't care either way; I enjoyed the book, I'm going to enjoy the movies, and if other people like them that's awesome, I'll be glad to have someone to share the squee with. If not, it isn't the end of the world.

Though funnily enough, I have a friend who loves Lord of the Rings and couldn't get through The Hobbit. She saw Hobbit and really enjoyed it. So did another friend who wouldn't even watch LOTR; now she's looking forward to the second film. So, yea, they might not have the same exact audience and everyone might not be satisfied (though when are they ever), but I'm just glad they're being made. *shrugs*

It's so cute how adaption-only people get so spiteful when people who have read the original source have complaints and criticism.

People who read the book are allowed to have expectations and they are ALLOWED to be disappointed if those expectations are subpar. They are ALLOWED to be disappointed if something they look forward to in the book is altered. Especially in cases like The Hobbit or LotR, these books are peoples childhood so of course they hold it close to their hearts.

Just because people who have only seen the movie don't have any point of reference does not make you a better or more tolerant person. Which is why it's so cute seeing these adaption-only people parading around like speshul snowflakes as if liking the adaption is so edgy and progressive or whatever shit they think they are being. LBR it just means your easy to please and have low standards.

Also unrelated but this kinda reminds me of the situation in the Shingeki no Kyojin fandom. Manga vs Anime-only fans. SnK anime-only fans are so cute in their spite because of their refusal to read the manga they get spoiled and get butthurt about it. I can only laugh at their disappointment because they brought it upon themselves for entering a fandom where people are up to date with the manga!

Protip:Don't go into a fandom and expect everyone to censor themselves for the anime-only ppl.

I like the part where Legolas is doing the boobs and butt sexy girl pose instead of the lady.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-04 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
I like both the books and the movies while acknowledging each of their shortcomings. Tolkien wasn't perfect (dense, heavy-handed, in need of an editor), and god knows PJ isn't either (commenters upthread have already done a good job with that list), but honestly, taken together they give me something I am ravenously fond of.

Re: The Hobbit: I freely admit I was at first in the "Tauriel are you kidding me what is this shit" camp, but that's mostly because it annoys me to death that they're giving her a romance plot, of all goddamn things. Because here's what PJ sucks at: romance and female characters. But after getting off my high horse about that, I'm totally looking forward to it, and feeling pleased that there's a lone vagina in Tolkein's (admittedly glorious) sausage fest. Though I would kill for female dwarves. OH MAN.

This conversation also makes me think of Harry Potter. I thought the movies were huge, festering shitpiles, but instead of bumming me out, it made me kind of relieved. Because it meant I could hold on to my own interpretations of the characters and what I imagined things looking like - because whatever the movies were doing, it wasn't Harry Potter to me, so I could just ignore it, stop watching after the 4th shitpile, and let other fans carry on as they wanted.

tl;dr i wanted to talk about my book/movie feels. it was self-indulgent.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-04 09:49 am (UTC)(link)
No sane book fan can watch these movies or care for the shit done there. I stopped at the Fellowship. So yeah, you can enjoy your shitty visual fanfiction in peace.

I read the books when I was young (probably read LotR the first time when I was 11 or 12). I agree with those who say the books can sometimes be dense and tedious to read. I was never able to read Helm's Deep or most of Minas Tirith (though I did get through the angst-fest that was Frodo and Sam's journey, for some reason) until after the LotR movies.

As a late teen I absorbed The Silmarillion liek whoa. I tend to think it's because it reads not unlike reading Bible stories. Straight from the Bible (which as a kid, from a Christian family, I did every once in a while).

I liked the movies. I know, they changed a lot of things. Hey! It happens! I personally feel the true intent of the story stayed intact.

I like The Hobbit. I like that it is more serious than the original book, that it pulls in side information from the appendices. I would have ficking hated a dead accurate adaption of the book - of any of the books. LotR would have been long and boring. The Hobbit would have been a cheesy kiddy movie that has very little connection to LotR except for a few names.

But I damn well want Bard to kill Smaug. Tauriel can go kill Bolg.

I also worry about this supposed crush Kíli is supposed to have on her, but that's just my shippy heart getting pissy about a vag getting in the way of my OTP.

In conclusion: Fuck you, purists! Yes I read the damn books! I love the movies anyway!
