I really don't like the trend of professional relationships using given names. It weirds me out when a doctor or banker calls me Firstname. We aren't friends, you are providing a service and I am your customer. I'm Ms/Mrs. Surname, not Firstname.

I wonder if that's really a cultural thing. I'm used to doctors and their staff calling me by my first name. Doesn't bother me.

I doubt it's cultural. Every time it's come up in conversation, I'm the odd one out. It might be generational. The only people who agree with me are my grandparents generation.

That could be part of it. I also wonder if it's generational?

With me I suppose it depends on the nature of the business. My dentist calls me by my first name, but then, I've been seeing him since I was ten...

Yeah, I can definitely see how it would change with different businesses.

ngl I wish everyone would call me Ms. Surname or ma'am/madam.

My doctors always call me by my first name. Has never bothered me *shrugs*

I feel weirdly condescended to whenever people call me "Miss Lastname." I can't articulate why, but it immediately gets my back up.

"Miss" is pretty condescending, like they're calling you a little girl, that's why I prefer Ms. (pronounced mizz)

That's really weird to me. I work at a doctor's office, and he and I both call the patients by their first names...I can't imagine going around referring to them as Mr. Smith or Mrs. Jones.
