What are your pet peeves?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-05 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I missed the last one.

Re: What are your pet peeves?

People starting repeat threads because they missed the last one.

Also, your face.

NAYRT

Are you the one going around various threads telling people you don't like them? I think you need a new hobby.

People who complain about innocent repeat threads.

Pet peeve = pet names. Strangers that call me "hun" skeeve me out. :/

I also don't like it when cashiers/bartenders/waitstaff call me by my first name because they read it on my debit card or ID. I know it's completely innocuous, but OH GOD I DIDN'T INTRODUCE MYSELF WTF STOP THAT GET OUT OF MY HEEEEEAD.

meeee toooo. I get that it's kind of a regional thing but it just bugs me! Always feels so condescending.

Wow, that's weird. I've experienced it the other way around - as a server or cashier I've had to wear a nametag, and occasionally some people will act really familiar with me and say my name like they know me and I just want to be like "no"

Same. I don't like people shortening my name either or making some other nickname out of it.

So much this. Please don't call me "honey" or "sweetie" especially if I don't know you and you're not that much older than me.

I really don't like the trend of professional relationships using given names. It weirds me out when a doctor or banker calls me Firstname. We aren't friends, you are providing a service and I am your customer. I'm Ms/Mrs. Surname, not Firstname.

I wonder if that's really a cultural thing. I'm used to doctors and their staff calling me by my first name. Doesn't bother me.

My doctors always call me by my first name. Has never bothered me *shrugs*

I feel weirdly condescended to whenever people call me "Miss Lastname." I can't articulate why, but it immediately gets my back up.

That's really weird to me. I work at a doctor's office, and he and I both call the patients by their first names...I can't imagine going around referring to them as Mr. Smith or Mrs. Jones.

People who think your mom and your face jokes are still funny.

Know-it-alls and snobs.

Oppression olympics and people who act like white cis gay men are the ultimate enemy.

Gay men who think their opinion on a woman's looks is relevant.

People in my neighborhood who just let their dogs run around.

Re: What are your pet peeves?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-05 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, I've seen plenty of complaining about white cis gay men, but are they more of an enemy than white cis straight men?

I have too many.

Probably my biggest one is unsolicited advice. just NO. Also people giving me nicknames. I once had a girl call me a shortened version of my first name (which I never use, and have never given anyone permission to use) without asking and it wasn't even someone I knew well - a friend who I'd recently met. It just feels really intimate and like acting like we're best friends or sisters or something. Um. Bad drivers. People leaving lights on when they've gone to bed/left the house. My brother yelling like he's actually in a stadium when watching football on TV at our house.

I got so much unsolicited advice when I worked in retail, usually regarding my appearance.

And children staring at me and making rude comments.

Unintentional ableism

(Anonymous) 2013-12-05 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Right now? CNN and Yahoo posting pictures of kids with autism being all strange and mysterious, and kids with Down Syndrome being angelic. Because that's not patronizing and semi-creepy, that's awareness!

People who actually type signatures into the body of forum posts. Use the actual signature function, geezus. Even worse if they're gimmicky with random quotes attached or some topical zinger about the thread in question.

People who drive way under the speed limit, mostly because every time I run into someone who is, there's too much traffic to pass. (On the other hand I tend to drive slow after work so I can't point too much of a finger.)

People who get uppity about being carded for cigarettes. Especially when there's a sign that says "We ID EVERYONE". I'm not losing my job because you feel the need to act like a two year old over something that isn't a big damn deal.

I have so many, but I'll be brief.

My roommates leaving on lights/TV/radio when they've left a room and aren't coming back anytime soon.

Bad drivers, especially those who are too slow or people who don't use their damn turn signals.

Since there are some about names already, I thought of another name one. It's going in the opposite direction of nicknames as pet peeves and is pretty assholish, but anyway: people with names that are almost always conventionally shortened refusing to have theirs shortened. If your name is Alexandra and you won't let people call you Alex or Allie or Sandra or anything else shorter than the full four syllables, I'm going to think you're stuck up. For guys it's even worse, sorry. The only "Joseph" I know who doesn't go by Joe is a spoiled brat.

People who call, I tell them they have the wrong number, and call again anyway.

Did you not hear me the first time? Did you think I was just saying that for kicks?

TV volume, shopping carts, healthcare website, pumpkin

(Anonymous) 2013-12-05 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
TV volume variations – seriously, I should not have to scramble for my remote to turn down the volume every time a commercial comes on because it’s three times louder than the show I was watching (particularly with FOX since our affiliate puts the shows on at such a low volume, I have to turn it way up just to understand what people are saying).

People who leave their shopping carts in the middle of the parking lot, especially when where they leave it is less than 20 feet from a cart stall

The healthcare website – I have messages, where are they? Why do I have to answer everything again, why can’t I just review the summary? I don’t think the verification system issue is going to be resolved in twenty-four hours because you’ve told me that same thing at least once a day for the last five days.

Why is every other dessert recipe something pumpkin? I get it, it’s a popular fall flavor, but, wow, you’d think it was everyone’s favoritest flavor ever, except for the fact that it virtually disappears for the rest of the year. Maybe if it was around for longer, it wouldn’t be so overloaded in the fall. That canned pumpkin stuff isn’t even pumpkin.
