I once had a girl call me a shortened version of my first name (which I never use, and have never given anyone permission to use) without asking and it wasn't even someone I knew well - a friend who I'd recently met. It just feels really intimate and like acting like we're best friends or sisters or something.

I hear you on that one. I have a common name with a common short form (though uncommon enough that most people with my first name go by the long form). I've been going by the short form for most of my life -- to friends and teachers whom I've given permission to call me that. I keep having coworkers use it -- especially my supervisors -- and because I'm conditioned to respond to it I don't immediately remember that "hey, this person isn't on the approved list," and by the time I do it's too late to call them on it.

You could still take them aside maybe and tell them you'd rather go by [longer name]?
