Re: What are your pet peeves?
Probably my biggest one is unsolicited advice. just NO. Also people giving me nicknames. I once had a girl call me a shortened version of my first name (which I never use, and have never given anyone permission to use) without asking and it wasn't even someone I knew well - a friend who I'd recently met. It just feels really intimate and like acting like we're best friends or sisters or something. Um. Bad drivers. People leaving lights on when they've gone to bed/left the house. My brother yelling like he's actually in a stadium when watching football on TV at our house.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-05 12:59 am (UTC)(link)I hear you on that one. I have a common name with a common short form (though uncommon enough that most people with my first name go by the long form). I've been going by the short form for most of my life -- to friends and teachers whom I've given permission to call me that. I keep having coworkers use it -- especially my supervisors -- and because I'm conditioned to respond to it I don't immediately remember that "hey, this person isn't on the approved list," and by the time I do it's too late to call them on it.

Re: What are your pet peeves?
(Anonymous) 2013-12-05 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)I once went to play at a good friend's house and she had another friend over, too. Friend and I knew each other from school, but Friend and Friend-of-Friend knew each other from somewhere else - which is always an odd experience as a kid, to be reminded that you are not your friends' entire social lives.
Anyway, Friend-of-Friend decided that my name was "too long" and declared that she was going to call me "Ann," which is not even a logical shortened version of my name, it's just similar to one of the syllables. I wanted to maintain the peace in this awkward (for a child) social situation and didn't say anything, but I thought F-o-F was incredibly rude for giving me a nickname not out of affection but because she didn't want to bother saying my name, and even worse - she chose one that made no sense.

And haha yes, I do remember that! But sometimes that can result in making new friends! (Sometimes. lol)
