Re: What are your pet peeves?

I have too many.

Probably my biggest one is unsolicited advice. just NO. Also people giving me nicknames. I once had a girl call me a shortened version of my first name (which I never use, and have never given anyone permission to use) without asking and it wasn't even someone I knew well - a friend who I'd recently met. It just feels really intimate and like acting like we're best friends or sisters or something. Um. Bad drivers. People leaving lights on when they've gone to bed/left the house. My brother yelling like he's actually in a stadium when watching football on TV at our house.

I got so much unsolicited advice when I worked in retail, usually regarding my appearance.

And children staring at me and making rude comments.

I hear you on that one. I have a common name with a common short form (though uncommon enough that most people with my first name go by the long form). I've been going by the short form for most of my life -- to friends and teachers whom I've given permission to call me that. I keep having coworkers use it -- especially my supervisors -- and because I'm conditioned to respond to it I don't immediately remember that "hey, this person isn't on the approved list," and by the time I do it's too late to call them on it.

You could still take them aside maybe and tell them you'd rather go by [longer name]?

In a similar vein to the nickname thing, my name shortens easily into a sort of nickname that my close friends and family use but when strangers do that it bothers me to no end. I don't know you, you don't get to shorten my name. Stop it.

Yep, it's the same thing except my name isn't terribly common, the shortened form is even less common, and I don't ever let anyone use it because I hate it. So when someone I don't know well just casually drops it like it's nbd? nope. not okay

Bleh, it must be even more infuriating when you don't like the shortened version. :/

It's actually kind of the opposite for me; my name's so short the only way to make it cute and endearing is to make it longer. People sometimes assume it's already a shortening, so they try making it longer. It's still really weird though, because the longer versions are reserved for close friends and family only.

I had a friend where people did this to her, like you she had a short name and people assumed it was a shortened version of a longer name when it wasn't. It must be equally annoying to have people lengthen a name.

I once went to play at a good friend's house and she had another friend over, too. Friend and I knew each other from school, but Friend and Friend-of-Friend knew each other from somewhere else - which is always an odd experience as a kid, to be reminded that you are not your friends' entire social lives.

Anyway, Friend-of-Friend decided that my name was "too long" and declared that she was going to call me "Ann," which is not even a logical shortened version of my name, it's just similar to one of the syllables. I wanted to maintain the peace in this awkward (for a child) social situation and didn't say anything, but I thought F-o-F was incredibly rude for giving me a nickname not out of affection but because she didn't want to bother saying my name, and even worse - she chose one that made no sense.

Yeah, that is pretty damn rude.

And haha yes, I do remember that! But sometimes that can result in making new friends! (Sometimes. lol)
