people who ship relationships that are platonic F/M friendships in canon totally get this too. Not nearly as much, but we do get it. I don't understand it either way. Shipping a friendship doesn't mean you think friendships without romance are impossible, just that you'd like it if this particular relationship was also romantic in addition to a close friendship.
