For me I get peeved at the "why can't they just be friends???" because for m/m and f/f pairings, they almost always ARE just friends in canon. If you want strong platonic friendships between two people of the same gender, you have tons and tons of canons to choose from, especially for male friendships. I could list "bromances" in pro media for days. Female friendships in media are not as plentiful because of the way media treats female characters in general, but I guarantee you that there are more female friendships than f/f romances in media. So it's like - what, having the majority of actual canon isn't enough for you?

Fandom is where people can play with and fantasize about things that won't actually happen in canon, and most of the time that includes m/m and f/f romances. It's irritating when people say "what about the friendship?" because fandom is one of the few spaces where people can write about gay relationships without any of the hand-wringing, the homophobia, or the prevention from higher-ups that happens when you make a TV show or film. No shit people are going to take advantage of that.
