[Doctor Who, "Day of the Doctor"]

Well he certainly didn't lie did he?

They aren't?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-06 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, she was kinda a dweeb, but she was also brave and quick-thinking and insightful (see her and her alien version keeping mum about who had the inhaler). I could do worse than to have her as my fan avatar. 8)

She was fine. Whatever.

But lol, I know a lot of people hate on "Love and Mosters" (and well the last 10 minutes are legitimately terrible), but I actually looove LINDA as a representation of fandom. I think it's qt!

(Anonymous) 2013-12-06 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Me too; I think it's actually a pretty true representation. I had a LINDA, although we weren't imploded by an evil monster so much as stupid squabbles, but that's another story. :/

She can't be worse then Supernatural's crack at it.

Is it wrong that I want a UNIT spinoff starring Dr. Lethbridge-Stewart? But only if Moff stays away. I just love UNIT always, I even have a little UNIT button!

I'd be more upset about it if she didn't end up being awesome.

Dude, she:

1) was smart - she figured out the stone dust mystery and where the Zygons were hiding using problem solving skills rather than a head full of facts. I'd have expected a fan stand-in to be all about trivia.

2) escaped a Zygon by tripping it with her scarf

3) had the respect of her co-workers - e.g. Kate asking her for ideas on how to cover up the TARDIS air lift and the fact that her male co-worker seemed to treat her well. I took Kate's reminding her to use her inhaler as a maternal thing, not "LOL, you have asthma and forget to deal with it."

I cringed but ended up loving the character.

Did you catch how she knew who was who and still kept it secret? :D

(Anonymous) 2013-12-06 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
What does it matter if you look exactly like her when your beef with the character was the personality traits, not the looks?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-06 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
She looks/dresses like a lot of fangirl types I know, actually...

It could have been worse. The brief glimpses of the Sherlock fan club from series 3 look don't look promising.

Secret 5 - Doctor Who, Day of the Doctor

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-06 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is Osgood, as portrayed by the actress Ingrid Oliver, from the 50th anniversary special episode "The Day of the Doctor" from the TV series "Doctor Who". She is a woman with light skin and long dark hair pulled back. She is wearing black-rimmed eyeglasses, a white sweater and a knitted scarf with stripes of red, green, yellow and brown. She looks kind of meek or pleading?]

This character felt like a really embarrassing portrayal of what Moffat thinks the average fangirl is like: awkward and dorky, clumsy and excitable.

I want to be mad except that I look almost exactly like her.

I liked her. She wasn't a horrible portrayal of fandom females (Supernatural has done worse, even if I have liked some of Becky's eps). She was pretty kickass and smart.

I was expecting worse from Moffat, tbh.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-06 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
I kept expecting her to do something interesting, or useful.

Instead ... nope.

Embarrassing.

well... he's not wrong...

She would have needed to yell more about sexism to be a truly accurate portrayal of DW fans, though.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-06 07:55 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously? Why does everyone take themselves so seriously? I thought Osgoode was great and I certainly didn't feel insulted by her as a fan representation.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-06 09:44 am (UTC)(link)

I'm not familiar with Dr.Who or this character, but I swear, the gimmick of "Putting glasses on an average or even beautiful person makes her ugly/dorky/nerdy" just WILL NOT DIE. Ugh :P

Not a DW fan, but that seems to be a trend in shows. "Reaching out" to the fangirls by making one horrible stereotype of a nerdy girl. Kind of like what Supernatural did with Charlie and that other girl before her. It's always horrible in some way.
diabolicalfiend: Callum's smiling awkwardly at a blonde girl (ah... hi)

[personal profile] diabolicalfiend 2013-12-06 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh. The only fannish thing she did was wear the scarf and ask the Doctor to save her (promptly not really needing said help), not to mention that she used the inhaler to good effect so I can't really see how someone with fannish elements that manages to hold her own is in any way a bad representation. I mean, there was Malcolm (mentioned) who was FAR WORSE.

[personal profile] arcadiaego 2013-12-06 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm suprised that she went down so well, given that as far as I can see she was intended to mock the fanbase. But at least she got to be competent, and to have a socially awkward but brilliant *woman* was a change from the Big Bang Theory style stereotypes for once.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-06 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
The bit where she and her Zygon doppelganger secretly co-operated was one of the sweetest moments of the whole special. Really hope Twelve runs into UNIT and we see her again some time.

She was one of the few things I liked about the special, I just cringed whenever she used her inhaler because whoops she would have just sprayed ventolin all over her tongue.
