Welp.

I have an idealized OC that I ship with a very conventionally attractive canon character. I figured there was nothing wrong with it since I only ever mention it anonymously and without naming the fandom. But I just realized my OC is 15 and the canon character is somewhere in his 20s or maybe even 30s (his actual age is never discussed, but based on what the show gives us, there's pretty much no way he's 18 or younger). It's a medieval canon, and I almost never actually think about the sexual aspect of the pairing (yes, I'm weird, I'm basically an oversized child whose fantasies are more "princess" than "sexy"), and I fully support people's right to ship whatever they happen to ship, including underage, but...now that it's me, I kind of feel icky.

...I just want someone to reassure me that I'm not icky, or at least shouldn't feel that way considering how I don't care when it's anyone else's ship. :/

Age difference is a really common kink. Hell, I have it in some instances.

You're fine.

(just admit you're talking about SnK man)

But, well, if it makes you feel a little uncomfortable, can't you age your oc to 16? I'm a huge fan of age difference, but 16 always feels like the cut-off for me, specially since in a lot of places that's the age of consent. The thing, too, is that sometimes you just gotta acknowledge that the pairing would be iffy irl. I'd never want to hear about a teenager having a relationship with an adult, but when it comes to fiction, you have the slight benefit of understanding where the characters are coming from and being able to control what happens in the relationship.

I kinda have a similar oc/canon pairing where one is 16 and the other 24. I definitely think that them getting into a relationship is questionable... and that's ok? Not every character is going to abide by the rules, or have every decision they make be a good one. There's also the fact that in a lot of fandoms teenagers go through a lot of situations that they normally wouldn't-- like, can you really tell a 15/16 year-old who's been to war who they can or can't have sex with? When you're writing teenage characters, they are at a place in which they're coming to terms with responsibility and adulthood and the ride is going to be rocky, and to consider those questions for a character isn't really wrong. Thinking about the way people work doesn't mean you condone the actions of people irl.

THIS. I felt vaguely icky for having shippy thoughts in one of my fandoms about a 14 year old boy and a man literally twice his age, when it was suggested in an RP I was in - but the boy was basically the ruler of his hometown and he was the one flirting with the man, and the man was the one going "uhhhmmm this is really wrong", but the boy was slightly unhinged, extremely manipulative, and persistent... I actually wound up feeling worse for the older man, since he was the one who was really being taken advantage of.

So in real life, while that kind of difference is a whole lot of DO NOT WANT, in certain fictional settings and contexts there's a lot more ambiguity and wiggle room - and it's all fictional besides. Have fun exploring difficult situations while knowing that no harm is coming to real people.
