I completely agree the straightforwardness being a strength, since it has a much stronger sense of story and continuity than OUaT ever managed. The only thing the original does better is that I think it has better characters on a whole, though it's also had some terrible ones too.

I'm iffy on the Red Queen from what I've seen so far (I think I may be behind an episode or two). She actually reminds me a lot of early Regina, who was pretty damn stiff. But Lana Parrilla eventually grew into the role and I think Emma Rigby has been getting there.
