a few years ago my next-door neighbour, when driving by, saw me drawing with sidewalk chalk and stopped his truck to talk. he asked about my dad and I said something along the lines of "uhh...he died last year." he offered his condolences and apologized for not knowing and whatnot, which was all fine (though pretty awkward). later, when I was walking my dog, I noticed the man walking (pretty far) behind me. I assumed he was just taking a walk and didn't care until I noticed he was still behind me after taking some pretty out-of-the-way turns. the next day the same thing happened, so I told my mum and we bought some pepper spray, but couldn't really prove anything was going on. it went on for a couple more days until one day, feeling angry and scared, I stopped with my dog and turned around to stare at him with what I hope was something of a firm expression. he slowed down considerably. I quietly said to my dog (who was very friendly, very short, not at all intimidating, and also not great at following commands) and said, "Gordon, bark." I don't know how on earth he knew what I was saying but he starting barking his head off. the man quickly took a turn and I haven't seen him at all in the few years since.

keep in mind that I would have been 15 or so at the time, and this was a 45-50 year old man who we'd lived next door to for years. since my home state/town is such a safe place usually, I didn't think anything of telling him about my dad. pretty creepy.
