You can't take what fandom says about a character to heart. Fandoms like SPN have a huge tendency to see what they want in the episodes vs what is really being shown. I can understand discussion of parental abuse helping you, but don't drag down a character because of your own personal issues.

Nothing that I can see. I also think that John was established as abusive from S1, to all the cries of "Carver/Gamble ruined John's character" are ridiculous.

He taught his boys to survive in a harsh world that wasn't going to cut them any breaks. That may not be a pleasant lesson or one any parent would want to have to teach, but you can't deny it's served them exceptionally well.

Taught them by abandoning them and constantly endangering them. A good father would have put them in foster care, or at least left them with Bobby.

Yup. How can leaving them alone for days in sleazy motel rooms when they were both under 10, prey for any predator, human or otherwise possibly be considered 'protecting' them?
