I gave up on the show years ago, so I really didn't care when I found out about that episode. My reaction was pretty much just "Oh, OK, well everything about Family Guy is awful now, so no loss there."

But strangely enough, I was actually disappointed when I heard he'd probably be coming back. Plenty of other fandoms kill off popular characters for good, and I'd like to think that they should at least go that route instead of making it seem like they were going to make a serious change and then backing out.

I feel the same. Can't stand the show, but I was really hoping that he'd stay dead. Not because I hate him, but from what I heard, they did a pretty good job of "This character is dead, there's no way that he's coming back" in the episode, and it's pretty disappointing that they're already backtracking.
