I feel more like I switched timelines or was dropped in to the future or something. Things kind of changed overnight before I had time to feel old over it. :P

I miss it too, OP. There was a very sweet spot between pre-internet fannishness and tumblr-dom, a spot that was full of journal comms and BBS and mango-trees and bishonen with hair of every color under the rainbow ...

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I think my fandom is more active on LJ now than it has ever been before. I thought it was dying, but then I signed up for every fest I could find and participated in like 12 LJ fests this year...so yeah LJ is not dying.

Have you tried advertising your LJ on your tumblr?

I also miss it. There are a lot of aspects of fandom I feel are kind of the same, but I just miss being able to communicate and have actual discussions.

Also goddamn I miss moderated fan communities, when people couldn't tag whatever they wanted on whatever tag they wanted and spam things up willy nilly. Drives me crazy.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
All of this, I miss it all.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I miss it as well. And yeah, I feel old about the whole thing.

this being the comment in which anon rants like it's 1894

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
...I never got into LJ. The whole exhibitionistic put-your-life-on-the-Internet thing turned me off from the beginning, even when it was in its larval stage. Now, with things like Facebook and Google basically taking over a person's whole life (literally), it freaks me out completely. I'm not lost, OP, I AM TOTALLY PARANOID. It's horrifying. If you get caught in the background of somebody else's picture just because you're standing outside, minding your own business, suddenly you're on the Internet, and anyone who wants to find you, can. (Look up Facebook's brand-new "auto-tagging" "feature.")

There are Very Bad people who I DO NOT WANT TO FIND ME, Internet. Stop trying to upload me without my knowledge OR my consent, kthxbye.

The thing that I liked about LJ was the various privacy levels, so you could choose who could read your life-on-the-internet. Tumblr and Facebook and Google is just HELLO HERE YOU ARE LET US NOTIFY EVERYONE EVERYWHERE ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE DOING. I do not like it.

I totally white-out with rage over the google-plusification of youtube. STOP ASKING ME TO CONNECT MY ACCOUNTS. I DON'T WANT TO CONNECT ACCOUNTS. I DON'T WANT TO MAKE A NEW ACCOUNT EITHER. I WANT YOUTUBE TO STAY ON FUCKING YOUTUBE.

Are you talking about LJ or tumblr? Because it was easy to never have your personal stuff show up on LJ or to anyone you didn't want to see it. Tumblr is the one that has essentially zero privacy controls. You can post something and set privacy controls but anyone who sees it can share it out publicly. That's why so many of the old LJ users who grudgingly followed fandom to tumblr don't make personal posts and still use their LJ for personal entries.

Meh, I still miss the days from when my fandom was on usenet or webrings. Damn those were fun, and people put more of an effort in back then, I'm sure of it. Apart from anything else you needed to learn basic html to construct your own webpage for the webring.

Secret 11 - LiveJournal, tumblr, general fandom

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-08 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is a drawing of an old man sitting on a rocking chair and smiling.]

I don't feel any particular way about tumblr. I use it and don't have any issues with it. I've come to accept that that's where fandom's moved to.

I still can't help but feel nostalgic for the old days when my fandoms were still active on a journaling service, though. If I had known things were going to change so drastically, I wouldn't have wasted so much time not writing fanfic or enjoying fandom in the ways only a journaling service can provide.

Those days just all feel so far away now and I feel like an old woman. If I could have LiveJournal back the way it used to be, I'd go back in a heartbeat.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a weird feeling for me because I was never an active participant in fandom, but I lurked a lot of places and wrote some anonymous fic before taking a break my first year of college. Then I came back and all the comms I'd frequent were gone. I didn't know Tumblr was the new fandom place, so I just searched around for stuff before giving up. Even now that I'm on Tumblr and settled into some new fandoms I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing or where to go to find the stuff I was into before, and I feel kind of lost even when I do find it because I'm looking for the same experience I had before, and it's just not there.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I miss the days when my fandom was on yahoo groups, lol. And the zines. Still have some of those somewhere.

I do miss LJ being the fandom hub. I've signed up for a tumblr account, but I must be old or something, because damned if I can figure out how things work. I mean, yeah, I know how to heart things and reblog things and follow people, but...where is the community and the interaction? I have yet to find it for my fandoms. I just feel like some random derp who is finding awesome gifs but can't connect with anyone.

[personal profile] bringreligiontothewamwams 2013-12-08 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I miss the forums and discussion groups too. There is no sense of back-and-forth in fandom right now. Of course it might just be there is no big fandom that requires back-and-forth discussions and interactions right now. For all that Hunger Games or Avengers seem to be the "big" fandoms, there isn't much in the way of layers or easter eggs in them that would require a fandom hub to explore. You look at the Tolkien, Pratchett, Japandom (from the days when there wasn't enough anime/manga for you to pick and choose, and it was all or none) or even, yes, the Potterdom, there was a lot to discover, argue, peel back and delve into so there needed to be hubs and discussion groups. Right now fandom seems to be for stuff there is already a dozen wikis for or so unsubtle you can fire out a dozen bland-fics before breakfast. No need to group around and discuss.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so with you there, OP. If I could have fandoms go back to LJ, I'd gladly jump on board with that. After all of the drama and wank that Tumblr propagates, I'm ready for fandom to get more chill again.

That'll take about 15 years to happen, right now what is coming through are the post 9/11 kids who are rebelling against their relatively chill 1990s parents by being angry, vengeful, and judgemental as fuck (they are a loaded gun of a generation) just as GWB taught them to be. We need to wait for their kids to come in and rebel against the the selfish judgementalistic bastards by being chill. The earliest we can really expect the new caring generation is about 15 years time.

There was plenty of drama and wank when LJ was popular. Just check the fandom wank archives.

old lady reminisce

(Anonymous) 2013-12-09 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Tumblr is just amazing for fanart (seriously, it was so hard finding large amounts of good fanart back in the day), getting fandom news, and just being fannish in general. People will make posts and reblog even just one small scene, or one observation of a character.

Buuut... I really, really miss the discussion format/open-forum space that lj comms used to allow. I loved reading the debates and varying opinions, and discussions that would happen, and participating in those discussions myself (kind of like the atmosphere here at fs!). On tumblr you only get single blog posts announcing statements out to everyone who looks at the tag/follows them, which will get likes or reblogs in the form of 'feedback'. Or you'll get a reblogged conversation going on between a few people, and one that you'd feel weird participating in because you're not in their group of friends. The discussion and mass fan participation is just totally gone.
I also miss being able to easily meet fans of things you like through communities dedicated to a certain ship or character. It's a lot harder to do that on tumblr, if you don't go out and do the 'networking' yourself

And there, that's my old lady reminisce for lj. I like tumblr, but sometimes I wish there could be both.

Yeah, I feel a bit of an old fart of Fandom too, and I've only been online for around 12 years. I'm a bit sad that life on LJ has slowed down, I still avoid Tumblr, and fail to understand Facebook at all.

I'm just happy for the RP community on Twitter for giving me somewhere to actually socialise, instead of feeling like I'm all on my lonesome, buried amongst cold unfeeling fanfics.
