I would if you can explain what that means. :( Like...stories that just talk about the surroundings? When I think of atmosphere, I automatically think of scary things.

To me, I think surroundings. Like in fantasy novels where there is lots of world building. The fic will go into lots of details about the space that characters interact in. It doesn't have to be purple prose, but good world building.

I think atmosphere can also do with scary things. Like a good tone for the book, which goes back to world building.

Does this make sense? Or am I off the mark, fs?

I must be thinking tone then. Hm.

Well, the secret does say tone as well. Like setting + tone (atmosphere). Atmosphere in writing means tone or mood of the piece.

Like mmm... I think of one DeanCas fic, Ghost Dance that delves into brain damage and its effect on Dean. It has a really eerie tone to it, but also good world building as they live in pos-apocalypic isolation. So to me, that would be what the secret maker is referring to.

recs

[personal profile] sootyowl 2013-12-08 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Two of mine:

Snape: The Home Fries Nazi (Snarry): After the war Snape takes up a job as a fry chief. The world building of the restaurant and the village he lives in is great. http://pir8fancier.nfshost.com/hp_hfn.html

Easy There (Merthur): Focuses on university life of Merlin and cast and rowing. Has a great uni atmosphere and really goes into rowing teams in college. http://archiveofourown.org/works/7197

I know there is great Merthur fic set in yonder days that is great at describing the atmosphere. It might be The Crown of the Summer Court? http://www.intimations.org/fanfic/merlin/The%20Crown%20of%20the%20Summer%20Court.html

Ha. I second the first and third of those recs! I've noticed (in my recent foray into the fandom) that the Merlin fandom tends to be rather good with atmosphere. And, Snape: The Home Fries Nazi is just classic and wonderful.

Huzzah! We seem to roll in the same fanfic lanes, haha. I think Merlin fics do well with atmosphere as well. Something about the old setting, really brings out some good world building.

I'm only rolling in the Merlin fandom as of very recently (like, I'm still at the beginning of season 4 and utterly gutted by certain events), but I've been loving everything I've read so far.

I used to be really into Merlin fandom back in s1-3. I still love it, but I stopped reading/writing as much fic during s4-5 as I puttered into some other fandoms. Recently, I started reading some more fic for it.

I hope you enjoy the rest of Merlin :)

Reccing one from all my current fandoms: all canon AU or canon divergence

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2013-12-08 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
'On a Clear Day' by Perfica (http://archiveofourown.org/works/154135): creepy, post-apocalyptic HP fic (Snarry)

'The Lotus Eaters' by aldora89 (http://archiveofourown.org/works/277853/chapters/440466): lovely, scary alien setting with a wonderful alien OC (Star Trek XI- Kirk/Spock)

'On the Wings of War' by AlchemyAlice (http://archiveofourown.org/works/245211/chapters/378117): love this alternative take on season 5 of Supernatural (Destiel, but mostly about Dean). I'm a fan of body horror, and this definitely has it in spades.

'The Sorcerer and the King' by winterhill (http://archiveofourown.org/works/111469): yay Merlin gets to show off and so much angst! (Merthur)

Seconding #1, 2, and 4. I haven't read #3, but it sounds right up my alley. (I recced Ghost Dance to kaijin up thread and you might like it? It has to do with Dean and Cas in a post-apocalypic isolation. Dean suffers brain damage and Castiel has to take care of him. http://archiveofourown.org/works/129418/chapters/183881)
