Secret 1 - Atmosphere in fanfiction

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-08 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is a painting or photograph? of a street from the past in shades of orange. It looks sort of old-fashionedly European in style. There are carriages and several people milling about. The buildings look old, about two or three stories tall? There is a monument of a person high up to the left. It's a very pretty picture.]

I wish fanfic would devote as much time writing love letters to the atmosphere and setting of their canon as they do writing love letters to the characters. Often, the settings are just as fascinating.

Painting, I think... Looks very typical of John Atkinson Grimshaw's style, though I could be wrong!

Thank you, you were right!

Notes

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-08 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a painting titled "Pall Mall; and St James's Street" by John Atkinson Grimshaw (British person who lived from 1836 to 1893)

(Thank you galerian-ash and tweedisgood for the info!)

Secret 2 - Fandom darlings, celebrity

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-08 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is a close-up of a dandelion or dandelion-type flower missing several of its airborne seeds.]

If I could have one wish it would be to be fandom's female darling. Like a sassier, tit-having Tom Hiddleston.

Secret 3 - Talking animal sidekicks in children's movies

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-08 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is the animated snowman from the CGI film "Frozen". It is excitedly smiling down at a purple flower in the middle of a snow-y place, surrounded by trees.]

I think people whining non-stop and refusing to see the movie because of this snowman are overreacting and being childish. IT'S A KID'S MOVIE. It's for them to enjoy, not you.

Of course those talking animal characters can be irritating. You don't have to like them. I don't like some of them either. But they're there for the kids that do like them. I absolutely LOVED Meeko when I was little and I still have a Meeko toy that I got when I was 3 or 4. If I'd seen Pocahontas for the first time as an adult I probably wouldn't have liked him much. But I'm still glad he was there because he made child me happy.

Funny how I've never heard anyone bitch about Sebastian, Abu, Mushu - or any of the others from any of the Disney Renaissance movies. Oh, right, because they are the ones most of the complainers enjoyed as children so they're off limits to criticism.

Secret 4 - Once Upon a Time, retellings/crossovers of fairy tales

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-08 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is a promotional image of the TV series "Once Upon a Time", featuring Princess Snow White, as portrayed by the actress Ginnifer Goodwin, walking carefully through a passageway made of wranches. She is a young woman with light skin, long, wavy dark brown hair, and wearing a short-sleeved white dress.]

I'm sad that this show exists and is successful, because I had an idea years ago for a "Grimm and edgy" epic with fairy tales all twisted together, and now if I ever do anything with it people will think it's derivative. [sad face emoticon]

I had bits and pieces of Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, The Snow Queen, The Three Little Pigs, The Princess Who Never Laughed/The Golden Goose, Rumpelstiltskin, Jack and the Beanstalk, Donkeyskin, Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, East of the Sun West of the Moon, Rapunzel, Bluebeard, Beauty and the Beast, Diamonds and Toads, and The Seven Ravens. It was going to be so awesome. ...I thought so, anyway.

Secret 5 - FimFiction.net, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, fanfiction archives

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-08 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is a screencapture of the "My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic" fanfiction archive "FimFiction.net". It shows a banner with a white and purple unicorn on top, and below a story called "The Beginning of Something Bigger" with a purple unicorn (Twilight Sparkle) and a blue and rainbow-colored pegasus "Rainbow Dash" smiling at each other next to the summary.]

Best fanfiction website. Period. The tag system is incredible, the way the site is set up is really good, the comments section has helpful critique...

This is the model more fanfic sites should base their systems off of. Maybe it's the best because it's only one fandom?

Secret because: I think it's better than FanFiction.Net and Archive Of Our Own which is heresy apparently.

Secret 6 - Despicable Me

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-08 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is the main cast of the CGI animated movie "Despicable Me": An expensively dressed short, bald man, three young girls clinging to him, and four yellow critters dressed as engineers? machinery workers?]

I like Despicable me for Gru and the girls... but I think the minions are incredibly annoying. I wish they weren't in the films.

Secret 7 - Celebrity deaths

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-08 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is a lower quarter of a face of a man (actor Paul Walker?) with a slight beard and mustache. He has light skin, a few moles on his neck and is wearing a dark gray polo shirt. He seems to be smiling.]

Whenever a celebrity dies in a dramatic, highly-documented way, I'm compelled to absorb every detail available: witness accounts, official reports, images.

Even if I didn't follow their career or if they lived and died before I was born, I want enough info to know, "Could he see it coming? Did he suffer long? How did the first people on the scene react?"

I know I'm not the only person who does this, but it's really morbid and leaves me feeling hollow after. I wish I could stop being so acutely interested by it.

Secret 8 - Frozen, ethnic representation, tumblr, social justice

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-08 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is a comparison of screen-captures of the characters from the CGI animated film "Frozen", next to photographs of Sami people wearing traditional and casual clothing. They have rosy light skin and blonde to dark hair. Their clothing has mostly red, yellow, white and blue colors and is very warm.]

After seeing Frozen, I read an article about how Kristoff's clothes were supposedly Sami-influenced, and was like, "okay, I guess tumblr was right in this one. They could've totally added some diversity by making him Sami." So I looked up pictures of Sami people.

THEY'RE WHITE. THEY ARE FUCKING WHITE AND BLONDE. DOES TUMBLR NOT REALIZE IT'S COMPLAINING ABOUT THERE NOT BEING ENOUGH WHITE AND BLONDE PEOPLE IN A MOVIE FILLED WITH WHITE AND BLONDE PEOPLE?

Secret 9 - Supernatural Kink Meme

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-08 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is Sam and Dean Winchester from the TV series "Supernatural". They're two men with light skin and short brown hair wearing shirts and jackets and looking upset and cringing at something off-screen.]

I am tempted to fill random prompts on the kink_meme, just to get over my writer's block.

Notes

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-08 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
For context, the Supernatural Kink Meme has the reputation of having, uh, fairly extreme content.

Secret 10 - The Lord of the Rings

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-08 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is Galadriel from the "Lord of the Rings" movies. She is an elf with pale skin, pointy ears and long, wavy blond hair. She is pouring water into a metal receptacle and looking sort of challenging to the side.]

When I am having trouble peeing in a public restroom (It's just a thing that happens to me sometimes.), I think of this scene. It works.

Secret 11 - LiveJournal, tumblr, general fandom

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-08 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is a drawing of an old man sitting on a rocking chair and smiling.]

I don't feel any particular way about tumblr. I use it and don't have any issues with it. I've come to accept that that's where fandom's moved to.

I still can't help but feel nostalgic for the old days when my fandoms were still active on a journaling service, though. If I had known things were going to change so drastically, I wouldn't have wasted so much time not writing fanfic or enjoying fandom in the ways only a journaling service can provide.

Those days just all feel so far away now and I feel like an old woman. If I could have LiveJournal back the way it used to be, I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Secret 12 - Mark Ruffalo (actor), Now You See Me (film)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-08 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is the actor Mark Ruffalo playing Dylan Rhodes in the movie "Now You See Me". He is holding up a card with a red question mark scribbled on top. He is a man with light olive skin, short, wavy brown hair, and a slight mustache and beard. He is wearing a brown suit and a white shirt, and is looking inquisitively at something or someone off-screen.]

For the first time I'm the fan who just does not get the attraction.

Not Secret - Star Trek The Next Generation?

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-08 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is Patrick Stewart playing Jean-Luc Picard from the TV series "Star Trek: The Next Generation". He is a bald man with light skin and wearing a dark red and black uniform somewhere indoors while raising his hands to the front beseechingly and tilting his head back while making this face with his eyes squinted and his mouth slightly open. On the lower edge is the text "ROFLRAZZI.COM"]

Wheeeeeeeen the moon hits your eye

like a big pizza pie, that's amore!
