I'll drink to that. The old Pit of Voles has really upped its game in the last year or so. It just needs to ban second person and present tense fics and it'd be pretty much perfect. You can filter out unwanted characters, set genres, look for or exclude pairings. It's struck a good balance between letting writers put in main characters to search by, but prevent them spamming every character who is even mentioned let alone gets a line, and it has pre-set warnings and tags so you don't get tag spam or warnings-wars. It has a nice simple tabled interface too.

AO3 looks like a geocities site next to the Pit's new look. heck, even Twisting the Hellmouth has left ao3 for dust these days.

I just went to check out FF.net since I haven't been there in ages, and I was rather disappointed. From your words I was expecting such great new things! But it's pretty awful still. I find ao3's look much easier to scan through. But man, FF.net's search funtions are definitely leagues better.

Oh, god, don't give it any ideas; they're ALREADY cracking down on second-person fics because they're "interactive" even when they're no such thing. There's nothing wrong with 2nd person or present-tense fics when they're done well. You think they're bad because Sturgeon's law applies, that's all.

"they're ALREADY cracking down on second-person fics because they're "interactive" "

They are?
I really hope so, just so certain fandoms stop being full of Reader/completely OOC character fics.

Yes, I'm bitter about that to the point I don't mind the unfairness of going after all second-person fics.

They have done, and tend to catch a lot of legit-fics because they rely on reports from idiots who tar everything with the same brush.

hey're ALREADY cracking down on second-person fics

You promise? You're not just dicking with me by giving me false hope? Its about fucking time. They need to crack down on the shitty present tense fics too though. They are annoying as fuck. That is the biggest sign of a new and immature writer, they have managed to write in the proper tense for written fiction and are trying to write for comic strips or narrate a movie.

*eyeroll* There's as many shitty past tense fics out there as present tense. If the Pit wanted to start policing quality of fic, there are much better ways than going after tense or voice. There are fantastic fics out there in second person, and in present tense, and sometimes -- hold on to your hat -- in BOTH at the same time! So get off your high horse about valid artistic choices and just use the damn back button when you find crap fic like the rest of us do.

Oh my god, shut the fuck up. Some of the best fic in my fandom are in present tense. It's actually harder to pull off without sounding like a nit.

Yeah, it's so much better these days. Those flashing ads are great. I love that they've changed so much that accessibility tools now don't work. It's nice people can't c/p, highlight, select, or touch the text in anyway. None of the downloaders work correctly now. Half the works marked slash I found while searching are really gen. And I love the option to view the work as a whole instead of having to click through all the chapters - oh, wait, still can't do that.

I'd say at this point tumblr is better than ff.net.
cassandraoftroy: Callisto from Xena, looking annoyed (callisto irritated)

[personal profile] cassandraoftroy 2013-12-09 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god, the inability to copy/paste is such a pain in the ass. A couple of months ago I was reading a fic that had several lines of dialogue in Russian (for reasons that made perfect sense) but didn't have translation footnotes, and I wanted to run it through Google Translate. I had to Google a way to break the c/p lock on each page in order to grab the Russian text. It was annoying as fuck.

If you're in Chrome? Right-click --> View Page Info, find the information you need. It's still annoying, but it's doable.

Edit: Never mind, I got confused--the fic I was thinking of (Complete Turnabout) had German in it. Out of curiosity, what fic had Russian in it?

It was an Avengers/Burn Notice crossover; I don't remember the title, but I need to go back and look for it again because it was a WIP and I want to see if it's updated. Since ff.net has a separate category for crossovers, I'm hoping it won't be too hard to find.

Does the FFdownloader still work?
